The DGT would increase the difference in speed limits between motorways and secondary roads

At least the DGT’s approach is quite logical: that is, we have a limit of 120 on motorways and a limit of 100 on roads, which is almost ridiculous in certain cases. One can drive much faster on certain motorways safely, while on certain roads going at 100 is already going very fast.

For this reason, during the presentation of the DGT’s campaign against drug driving, the Minister of the Interior, Jorge Fernández Díaz, said that the differences in limits between motorways and roads could be widened; whether by raising the limit for motorways, lowering it even further for secondary roads, or both.

The discussion about whether or not to raise the speed limit on motorways is something that has been debated for a long time. We have commented on it several times here, and we even had some hopes when in March the DGT announced that raising the limit to more than 120 km/h was under study, if the results of environmental studies allowed it. Well, we are still waiting for the “studies”.

But I think there are priorities on this issue. As you have probably already read, statistics indicate that most fatal accidents occur on secondary roads, so I believe that it is more urgent to address the issue of these roads. In this regard, the DGT has said that they will never raise the 100 limit for secondary roads, which is good; but more and better signage and more repairs on some of them are also needed, as they are almost impassable today.
