The electric future Range Rover will match its rivals with four motors, one for each wheel.

The British manufacturer has previewed some images of what will be its first fully electric model, confirming that its market launch next year is just around the corner.

The arrival on the market of a fully electric Range Rover is now only a matter of time… and not much of it. The brand’s engineers have spent months working on its development, aiming for the production model to reach the market next year. In fact, its unveiling is expected shortly, and reservations will then open in a few very specific markets.

Like the rest of the British manufacturer’s models, now under the control of Indian automotive giant Tata Motors, the new electric Range Rover will stand out for its luxury, comfort and off-road performance. Its external appearance, on the other hand, will not reveal that we are looking at an electric 4×4; instead, it will keep the tradition of its combustion-engined predecessors.

The engineers at Land Rover are already in the final stages of developing the new electric Range Rover, subjecting the vehicle to performance tests in extreme conditions. The company has shared some images of these tests, carried out under the punishing heat of the United Arab Emirates, and similar tests in conditions of extreme cold will almost certainly have been or will be carried out elsewhere on the planet.

The images published by the manufacturer show an elegant, sophisticated vehicle, as one would expect from a Range Rover. As for its technical specifications, there are still many unknowns, which will presumably be revealed at its presentation in a matter of a few months. Nevertheless, we already know some details.

Four electric motors are always better than two

As far as we know, the future electric Range Rover will feature an innovative system that will intelligently manage torque. This system promises to optimise traction by allowing each wheel to handle its own slip control, reducing the torque reaction time from 100 milliseconds to just 1 millisecond. To make this possible, the vehicle will have four electric motors, one per wheel.

The new electric Range Rover will thus follow in the footsteps of one of its main rivals, the G580 with EQ technology from Mercedes-Benz. The German manufacturer’s model also has four electric motors, which allow it to offer much superior performance on complicated off-road terrain and optimal traction at all times. The implementation of these four electric motors also allows the Mercedes-Benz 4×4 to turn on the spot, a feature that Range Rover has not confirmed but that would not be surprising to see on its luxury electric model as well.

There are, however, as we said, still many unknowns about the technical specifications of the highly anticipated electric Range Rover, such as the capacity of its battery pack or the power of each of these four electric motors. Being an extremely heavy vehicle, probably even exceeding 2,500 kg, we should not expect it to break range records, barring a surprise. That will almost certainly not be a problem for the type of customer who opts for a vehicle like this one, for whom the top priority is nothing other than luxury and its off-road capabilities.
