Changing only what was truly necessary. This is how Ford has approached the renewal of its best-selling car in Europe and one of the most successful compact SUVs, the Ford Puma, which barely receives any retouching to its bodywork but gets a completely new dashboard, following the increasingly fashionable trend towards digitalisation and large screens.

And it’s not that the Puma was poorly served in terms of connectivity or multimedia. But the new SYNC 4 infotainment system of Ford raises the bar. The new 12.8-inch customisable digital instrument cluster is now combined with a floating 12-inch multimedia screen in a horizontal position and tilted slightly towards the driver. Where the Puma previously had few physical buttons, the new Puma 2024 eliminates practically all of them, integrating even the climate and heated seat controls into the touchscreen.

The best part is that this new multimedia system is clearly faster than the previous one, and it also relies on AI to memorise and learn from the data the driver enters (routes, radio station preferences, etc.) and to make suggestions or respond more quickly when help is requested from the navigation or communication system. In addition to voice control, there is connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, now wirelessly. And there is a 5G modem on board, compatible with the Alexa Built-In personal assistant.

Now with predictive speed assist

From the outside it is not easy to tell the new Puma apart from the previous model. The logo changes, moving from the bonnet to the grille. The daytime running light signature is also new, although the design and shape of the headlights remain unchanged. Titanium versions receive a grille from which the chrome details have been removed, and ST-Line versions also replace the grille mesh with a sportier pattern. For the ST-Line X, a newly designed rear spoiler is added. As for bodywork colours, six options are available, including the new Cactus Grey.

Otherwise, the materials used in the seat upholstery are also new inside, and the steering wheel and centre armrest receive a new design, the latter now sliding. There is also a new ambient lighting system. Another addition is predictive speed assist, based on intelligent adaptive cruise control with stop&go function, with the advantage that it can adjust speed in anticipation of the road layout, taking into account bends, roundabouts or motorway slip roads and exits, for example.

As for engines, the range remains based on the excellent 1.0 EcoBoost 3-cylinder, in 125 CV versions with manual gearbox or with the Powershift dual-clutch gearbox, and 155 CV with dual-clutch gearbox only. Above these sits the Puma ST Powershift, which raises the power of the three-cylinder engine to 170 CV. All of them feature Mild-Hybrid mild hybridisation and therefore carry the ECO label of the DGT.
