The Smart #5 already has a price in Europe and an announced launch date

The first electric SUV from Smart will arrive in Europe this coming summer, offering a fairly spacious interior, good range and surprisingly high charging power.

At an event held this past Friday, Smart officially unveiled its first electric SUV for the European market, revealing both its price and the date from which it will begin accepting orders from European customers.

The entry-level version of this compact SUV, called the #5 Pro, will cost 45,900 euros in Germany. This model features a 76 kWh LFP battery pack and a 400V architecture, and it is the only version with this configuration. All the higher-spec versions in the range incorporate a 100 kWh NMC battery pack, and their 800V architecture brings with it the corresponding benefits in terms of supported charging power.

The Smart #5 Pro+ will have a base price in the German market of 50,900 euros, while the Premium and Pulse versions will cost at least 55,400 euros. At the top of the range, the Smart #5 Summit Edition goes up to 56,900 euros. It should be noted that this last version will be the top of the range only temporarily, as the company has announced a additional high-performance version in the near future, although no details about its price or technical specifications are known yet.

A completely different Smart

The Smart #5 departs entirely from the concept that until recently we all had of what a Smart was: a vehicle of small dimensions designed solely for urban use. At 4.7 metres long, we are now faced with an SUV of fairly generous dimensions, though not a large vehicle.

Based on the PMA2+ platform of the Chinese giant Geely, the Smart #5 stands out for its 800V architecture—except in the entry-level version, as we have already mentioned—which allows it to charge at a maximum power of 400 kW, making it possible to increase the battery’s state of charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes. Add to this the generous capacity of its battery pack, which reaches 100 kWh, and we have a vehicle from the brand that is no longer confined to urban use in any way, quite the contrary, as it is ideal for any weekend getaway or holiday regardless of destination.

The different versions of the Smart #5 feature either a single electric motor on the rear axle or two of them, in which case they offer all-wheel drive. The entry-level Pro version, as expected, has a single 250 kW motor, while the Pro+ and Premium versions are also rear-wheel drive but with slightly higher power reaching 267 kW. At the top of the range, the Pulse and Summit Edition versions have dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, with combined power of 432 kW.

As for range, the Smart #5 Pro is capable of covering 465 km on a single charge under the WLTP homologation cycle, according to the manufacturer. The Pro+ and Premium versions reach 590 km. The all-wheel-drive versions, as expected, see their range reduced slightly to 540 km.
