This is the Dyane 6, a legendary car that reigned across Europe

The Dyane 6 became one of the most popular cars from the French brand in the 1970s, with a design that drew inspiration from the equally popular 2 CV.

It was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1967 and became a real discovery for buyers that year. Its silhouette was very similar to that of the already popular Citroën 2CV, but with more angular shapes, in keeping with the fashion of the late 1960s. It stood out for a less curved bonnet and large, spacious doors.

The vertically opening tailgate gave access to a boot that anticipated the use of that space in the brand’s current models. In fact, the rear seats could be folded down, thus freeing up much more space. Inside, the tubular seats of the 2CV were retained, and plastic was used in several places to give it an interesting futuristic look.

All the elements needed for driving were oriented towards the driver, so everything was within easier reach and the functionality of the cabin was improved. Everything contributed to its success, although the engine and its low consumption also helped buyers turn to this model for the enjoyment of driving and its versatility.

Its stability and suspension were also highly praised, along with very efficient brakes. In terms of styling, the work of Louis Bionier, the designer in charge of the AY project, as it was known, also impressed. The result was built on the same assembly line as the 2CV and used its same structure.

The headlights were different, integrated into the front wings and with a chrome frame, which gave it a more refined appearance. The windscreen was positioned higher than on the 2CV and offered better visibility.

With all this, 1,443,493 units were manufactured, of which 233,104 came from the brand’s plant in Vigo. Its figure has appeared in many European films, as its resilience and durability allowed it to remain on the market from 1968 to 1987. There was also a van version, called the Citroën Acadiane or Dyane 6 400, which reached 250,000 units.
