CUPRA Tavascan VZ test: is the VZ version worth the extra €10,000?

We get behind the wheel of the sportiest version of CUPRA’s second fully electric model, with all-wheel drive, up to 568 km of range and a striking design

Since CUPRA unveiled its electric concept in 2019, expectations around its launch have not stopped growing. Now, the brand has brought its vision to life with the CUPRA Tavascan, a 100% electric coupé SUV that arrives with an aggressive design and performance worthy of the segment’s best.

The CUPRA Tavascan is offered with a single 77 kWh battery, but with two motor configurations:

  • Endurance: 210 kW (286 CV) and rear-wheel drive, with a homologated range of 568 km.
  • VZ: 250 kW (340 CV) and all-wheel drive, with a range of 521 km.

Both versions benefit from the MEB platform of the Volkswagen Group, the same one used by models such as the Volkswagen ID.5, the Škoda Enyaq Coupé and the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron. As for charging, it supports power of up to 135 kW on DC, allowing 80% of the battery to be recovered in just 30 minutes.

Sporty and aerodynamic design

In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4.64 metres long, 1.86 metres wide and 1.60 metres high, with a wheelbase of 2.77 metres. Its 540-litre boot outperforms some rivals such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

The Tavascan stands out for its aggressive styling. Its front lights with three LED triangles, the backlit logo and an aerodynamic drag coefficient of just 0.26 stand out, achieved thanks to details such as flush door handles and the black A-pillar, which create a floating-roof effect. There are also small air intakes in the lower front section, which help cool the brakes.

At the rear, a LED light bar connects the lights, giving it a futuristic look. The spoiler adds a sporty touch without compromising aerodynamic efficiency. In addition, the model name is not highlighted on the tailgate, but discreetly placed on the sides of the rear lights.

A luxurious interior

The Tavascan’s cabin embraces sophistication, with a floating Y-shaped centre console with copper-toned inserts. This design integrates the emergency button, a wireless charging tray for smartphones and two USB-C ports, located in a somewhat hidden position.

The infotainment system stands out for its 15-inch digital screen with wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Just below, there are touch-sensitive buttons for the climate control, which now feature illumination to improve usability, although many would prefer physical controls.

The digital instrument cluster, 5.3 inches, is somewhat small compared to the large central screen. The steering wheel integrates touch buttons that can be activated unintentionally in some situations, which could affect the driving experience. As for transmission, the Tavascan does away with the gear lever conventionally, replacing it with a selector located behind the steering wheel, similar to a windscreen wiper stalk.

Optionally, it can be fitted with the Adrenaline, Extreme and Winter packs, which include upgrades such as 21-inch wheels, LED matrix headlights, augmented reality on the windscreen, DCC Sport adaptive suspension, a glass panoramic roof, a Sennheiser sound system and heated seats upholstered in synthetic leather.

Dynamics and opinion

The CUPRA Tavascan offers a driving experience that surprises with its balance between sportiness and comfort. The steering is precise and quick, allowing great control through corners. Its McPherson front suspension and the multi-link rear axle have been tuned in Martorell to maximise dynamism and effectively absorb road irregularities. On the road, the model stands out for its composure and sound insulation, with double glazing to minimise noise, which creates a sense of superior refinement.

However, its weight of 2,273 kg affects inertia when taking fast corners, requiring more calculated driving. Despite this, the weight distribution and the low position of the battery provide outstanding stability. Throttle response is immediate, with instant torque delivery that makes the Tavascan feel agile and responsive at all times.

The braking system has two phases: the first uses the energy retention and regeneration system, while the second activates the mechanical brakes. This may require some adaptation, as the initial pedal feel can be softer than expected. It is also possible to adjust four levels of regeneration via paddles behind the steering wheel.

The CUPRA Tavascan has six driving modes, which modify the engine response, suspension stiffness and throttle sensitivity: Range (maximising range), Comfort, Performance, CUPRA (the sportiest, activated by a dedicated button on the steering wheel), Individual (with configurable parameters) and Traction, exclusive to the all-wheel-drive version.

Price and rivals

The CUPRA Tavascan Endurance starts at €52,010, while the VZ version is positioned above it. In its segment, it competes with:

  • Skoda Enyaq Coupé 85 (286 CV): €54,600.
  • Audi Q4 e-Tron (286 CV): €58,500.
  • Volkswagen ID.5 (286 CV): €51,000.
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E (269 CV): €54,045.
  • Skoda Enyaq Coupé RS (340 CV): €62,825.
  • Audi Q4 e-Tron (340 CV): around €65,000.

While the VZ variant offers 60 extra CV and all-wheel drive, its higher consumption and price make the Endurance version the most balanced option. Therefore, if I had to choose a CUPRA Tavascan, I would rule out the VZ version and recommend the Endurance version, with 286 CV, somewhat less sporty but just as capable at performing everyday tasks and with even more range.
