Ferrari has presented a patent showing a new, much more efficient V12 engine in terms of emissions.

Ferrari V12 Patent 7

The Cavallino Rampante brand has just filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The document shows a new V12 engine that should be much more efficient than the company’s current V12 engines.

In the patent filed with the Office, Ferrari explains how two different combustion methods could improve the engine’s efficiency. The first method involves injecting a small amount of fuel just before the spark plug fires to create a hotter air-fuel mixture. This will allow the catalytic converter to heat up faster when the engine starts. In this way, emissions during that phase can be reduced.

The second method presented by the Maranello brand involves installing a pre-chamber above the main combustion chamber, separated from it by a wall and connected through one or more open ports. It also has a second set of spark plugs, “to cyclically and selectively determine the ignition of the mixture in the pre-chamber and trigger the combustion reaction.”

Last September, the Italian manufacturer already stated that it would “fight” to keep its 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine. Recently, it has been forced to modify it to comply with the regulations of the current Euro 6 emissions standard.

Ferrari was able to meet this goal thanks to the engine, compliant with the new Euro 6 standard, of the new Ferrari 812 GTS, which produces the same 800 CV as the fixed-roof version.

Curiously, the Cavallino Rampante brand seems reluctant to hybridize or downsize its impressive V12 engine, even though most other manufacturers have already adopted both to meet the new, stricter emissions regulations.

“A naturally aspirated V12 is not a downsized engine, and to me it makes no sense as a hybrid. We will fight for the V12, of course. We will do everything possible to keep it, since it is fundamental to our brand. But a real hybridization of the V12? I don’t see it,” said Ferrari’s technical director, Michael Leiters, earlier this year. “The Ferrari LaFerrari was a performance hybrid. In the future, we are forced to analyze emissions, and if you really want to use the CO2 benefit, you must reduce its size.”

For now, the brand’s enthusiasts have reason to celebrate, since they will continue to hear the ‘celestial sound’ of the brand’s great powerplants for some time, something that surprises fans and even the automotive industry itself. What will the Italian manufacturer’s next model be like? Will it return to the targa body style, as has been rumored for some time, or will it remain focused on supercars with combustion engines?
