First contact with the KGM Torres EVX, a 100% electric SUV that is interesting and affordable

KGM expands its SUV range with the EVX, a version powered by an exclusively electric motor producing 207 CV and a 73 kW battery, starting from 34,500 euros and promising a maximum range of 462 km.

With interesting dimensions: 4.72 m long, 1.89 m wide and 1.72 m high, with a wheelbase of 2,680 mm, the new 100% electric edition of the KGM Torres is very appealing for getting into the new electric market, as it offers a spacious cabin, a very complete equipment list and a very reasonable price.

In addition, it features an LFP battery with Cell to Pack technology, developed by BYD, with V2L mode, which allows the vehicle’s energy to power small appliances. Its 73.4 kWh capacity gives it a range of 462 km on the WLTP cycle. It allows three-phase AC charging at 10.5 kW, and accepts DC charging at 120 kW, with an average charging speed above 90 kW over the full cycle, and promises to go from 10 to 80% battery capacity in 37 minutes when connected to a 300 kW fast charger. The powertrain and inverter assembly also come from the Chinese BYD.

Slight changes

Aesthetically there are no major differences between the combustion and electric variants, although the latter features a new, more aerodynamic front end with an illuminated grille, different bumpers and light units, as well as more aerodynamic covered wheels. Given its dimensions and battery capacity, its weight is not excessive, registering 1,915 kg kerb weight, but the height of its bodywork, the large-sized tyres (225/60 R18 and an optional 20-inch size) bring the homologated combined consumption to 18.6 kWh/100 km, a somewhat high figure when compared with its more recent competitors.

It also has a regenerative paddle system with five levels of adjustment and a heat pump climate control system. Thanks to the paddles, located behind the steering wheel, driving is very efficient, as it makes it possible to take advantage of the terrain’s topography and traffic conditions to recover energy easily. In minimum regeneration mode, the car coasts “under sail” with total smoothness, while at maximum level it brakes firmly as soon as you lift off the accelerator, acting as a “one-pedal” system.

The “Smart” mode operates automatically, modifying braking force according to the vehicle ahead, and the operating status is shown on the digital instrument cluster screen, noticeably different from the combustion version’s, which offers different graphic levels depending on the selected driving mode: Eco, Comfort, Sport and Snow, although it is worth remembering that this version is only available with front-wheel drive.

Roomy and spacious

The interior of this model, as in the combustion version, is particularly spacious and welcoming. The interior design offers a roomy, ergonomic cabin, dominated by a dual digital screen combining the instrument cluster and the infotainment system. It features eye-catching materials that appear to be of good quality. Its rear seats are particularly generous, with good legroom, headroom and easy access, as the rear doors are quite large.

It also has a very large boot of 599 litres, expandable to 1,662 if the second row of seats is folded down. Its loading aperture is very wide, making it easy to load bulky items, and its opening system is vertical, even though there is a horizontal handle on the right side of the tailgate, at mid-height.

Full equipment as standard

It is available in two trim levels, Trend and Life, always with the same motor power and battery capacity. Unlike the base version, the higher trim, Life, comes as standard with keyless entry, a wireless charger for phones compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a heated steering wheel, faux-leather upholstered seats (front seats ventilated and heated, rear seats heated) with lumbar adjustment and electric seat adjustment, a load cover, floor mats, tinted glass, electric tailgate, two-tone paint and roof rails.

Its price is 37,700 euros, that is, 3,000 more than the Trend, including a 3,000-euro brand discount, but not including government incentives, financing, income tax or CAE. What the brand does include, at no additional cost, is the installation of a home charger.

It comes with a single warranty of 7 years or 150,000 km, and 10 years or 1,000,000 km for the battery (at 70% capacity).

As for driver assistance and safety systems, there are no differences, since both trims include 8 airbags as standard, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping and centring, speed control, traffic sign recognition, forward vehicle departure warning, drowsiness detection, following distance monitoring, hill descent control, rain and light sensors, rear camera, and an alarm and anti-theft immobiliser.

Smooth and pleasant

During the brief test drive, carried out exclusively in urban conditions, we had no opportunity to put the model through demanding driving, although we did notice the high driving pleasure it offers, with a smooth, progressive start, a notable level of power and torque, and overall operation that conveys confidence and calm. As a good electric car, the absence of noise and vibration is noticeable, along with steering with good feel and suspension that filters road irregularities well.
