It is the end for the Peugeot 206

There are cars that reach the market and become so popular that they seem to become part of your life. The 206, at least, is part of mine, since it was the car I learned to drive in at driving school, and it is one of the city cars I like most.

The 206 first appeared in 1998 and, as of 30 April 2010, 6.8 million units had been sold, thereby overtaking the 205 as the best-selling model in the history of Peugeot.

In 2006 its successor, the 207, was launched. However, production and sales of the 206 are still continuing (under the name 206+) and will do so until the end of 2011. That is to say, after 13 years, production of this little car will come to a definitive end. At least in Europe, where EU legislation has prevented its continuation, but not in other parts of the world such as South America, China or Iran, where there will be 206s aplenty.

Throughout its history we have seen it in 3- and 5-door versions, a convertible, an estate and even a 4-door saloon that never went on sale in Spain. It was always accompanied by a wide range of diesel and petrol engines. In its competition variant, the 206 WRC was a successful rally car. In fact, in 2002 it was awarded by Autosport magazine as “Rally Car of the Year”.

Without a doubt, the 206 has been an extraordinary success for Peugeot and will continue to be wherever it goes.
