New 1.4 TDI engine from Audi, its smallest diesel powertrain

Audi will add a new powertrain to its line-up in the coming months, designed to power its smallest and most compact models.
It is a new three-cylinder diesel engine that uses the latest technical innovations to become a benchmark in its segment.
This new engine is built within the modular system family, which allows different powertrains to be obtained by modifying a small part of the components, reducing costs and improving quality. In this case, the new 1.4 TDI features a lightweight construction, using materials such as aluminium and silicon, which gives it a lightness never seen before in an engine of this type.
As an example, the total weight of the engine amounts to 132 kg, one of the lowest figures on the market. This 1.4 TDI inherits the stroke of the 2.0 TDI (95.5 mm), while the cylinder bore goes from 81 mm to 79.5 mm. In this way, the 1.4 TDI delivers 90 CV and 230 Nm.
Audi has not yet released consumption or performance data, but we are confident it will become a benchmark among engines of this type. What we do know is that it already complies with the Euro 6 emissions standard.

The 1.4 TDI also features a variable-geometry turbocharger, as well as a direct injection system (common rail) that reaches a pressure of 2,000 bar. The oil pump lubrication system also stands out, as it is capable of offering three operating levels depending on engine demand.
The vacuum pump is also mounted within the same oil pump housing, saving space and costs.
This engine is designed to be mounted transversely within the Volkswagen Group. Audi will be the first brand to launch it, while the other firms in the group (VW, Seat, Skoda) will have to wait a few months to enjoy this new powertrain.
