Peugeot e-208: the most powerful 208 is the electric one!

We were already able to see the new Peugeot e-208 live at the Geneva Motor Show. And now, to mark the launch of the new Peugeot 208 on the Spanish market, we have learned more details about the 208 electric.
A car that arrives with plenty of arguments to become a real alternative to combustion-engined city cars… and to take on the category leader among plug-in cars, the Renault ZOE, Spain’s best-selling electric car in 2018.

Of course, a lot will change in the coming months, with new entrants to the segment, such as the just-announced DS 3 Crossback e-tense, the Opel Corsa electric or the very Honda EV.
An electric city car with a sporty look
To begin with, it is striking that the Peugeot e-208 is the most powerful version in the launch range. Its electric motor produces 136 CV, 6 more than the 130 CV PureTech petrol. The rest of the Peugeot 208 range includes two more petrol versions with 75 and 110 CV, and the 100 CV BlueHDI. Let’s see it in video.

The driver of the 208 electric can choose between three different driving modes: Eco to prioritise range, Normal focused on comfort, and Sport mode, designed to deliver a sporty feel.
In this last mode, and thanks to the 100 kW (136 CV) electric motor, the Peugeot e-208 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds. Undoubtedly a standout figure, considering that due to the batteries, the weight is around 330 kg more than the equivalent 208 with a combustion engine.
Up to 340 km of range
The battery has a capacity of 50 kWh, which allows a WLTP range of 340 km, in line with the latest arrivals in the category. The car includes a 6.6 kW on-board charger, which can be upgraded to 11 kW as an option.
Peugeot quotes the following charging times:
- 24 hours from a domestic socket with a standard plug
- 14h from a reinforced domestic socket
- 8h with a Wallbox on a single-phase supply
- 5h with a Wallbox on a three-phase supply
- 30m for 80% charge at 100 kW fast-charging points
Another interesting detail is the battery warranty, which guarantees a capacity of up to 70% for 8 years or 160,000 km. Peugeot says that if the customer requests it, it can provide certificates of the battery’s condition, which is very useful, for example, when it comes to a possible sale of the car on the used market.
By the way: since it is located under the floor, it does not reduce boot capacity compared with the rest of the range.
Exterior design of the Peugeot e-208
Externally, the Peugeot e-208 is one of the electric cars we have seen recently that is least distinguishable from the combustion-engined versions. Especially in the GT Line trim versions, which are the first to be delivered to customers.

To tell the Peugeot 208 electric apart you will have to be very observant, looking at the “e” letters on the rear pillars, the “e208” logo on the tailgate, the absence of exhaust outlets, and the front grille mesh painted in the same colour as the bodywork. The lion on the front is also slightly different, with a finish that changes colour depending on the light.
Worth highlighting, in the versions we had the chance to see live with the aforementioned GT Line trim, is the clear sporty approach not only aesthetically but also dynamically. This is made clear by the choice of tyres: Michelin Pilot Sport 4, in 215/45 size fitted on 17-inch wheels.

Inside, the Peugeot e-208 benefits from the new design and the innovations introduced across the rest of the range, including the i-Cockpit driving position with 3D display mode. Among the driver assistance systems are adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, and automatic emergency braking that detects pedestrians and cyclists, both by day and by night.
Another notable aspect is the exclusive services that Peugeot has prepared for customers of its electric and plug-in hybrid cars, bearing in mind that the 3008 Hybrid and 508 Hybrid, both in saloon and SW body styles, will arrive shortly.

These services include advice on choosing the most suitable charging system for the customer’s home, the Trip Planner route planner in the navigation system, which takes range and charging points into account.
The Mobility Pro service is also announced, to make it easier to rent a replacement vehicle (for example for long journeys), as well as the so-called “E-coaching”, which provides tips for greater efficiency and allows comparison in a ranking with users of other Peugeot electric cars.

For now, the price of the new Peugeot e-208 has not been officially announced. The brand has opened an online form to request information, through which users can sign up to be the first to receive their cars at the end of the year, upon payment of a 500 euro reservation deposit.
