We have seen other versions of the Subaru WRX, but now a new version arrives aimed solely at the Japanese market. The Subaru WRX STI swaps its 2.5-litre, 300 CV engine for a smaller, lighter unit with 2.0 litres and 308 CV of power, a small change that sets it apart from the American and European versions.

The differences with the Subaru WRX S4 in terms of engine are quite small. The previous model has an engine that separates it by just 8 CV, so Japanese buyers can choose between the two models: if they want the performance with the comfort offered by the S4, or the tougher STI.

The engine fitted to the Japanese version of the Subaru WRX STI delivers 308 CV at 6,400 rpm and a maximum torque of 422 Nm at 4,400 rpm, sent to the wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, unlike the S4, which uses an automatic gearbox.

In addition, the Driver’s Control Center Differential (DCCD) lets the driver choose between several driving modes, depending on the style of driving preferred and the type of road being driven. What we do not yet know are the model’s performance figures, which will be available over the coming weeks.

The specifications of the Japanese model show that a lighter engine with smaller displacement delivers the same power, greater torque and possibly slightly lower consumption figures. As for exterior design, there are very few differences from the versions aimed at the European and American markets, so it seems to be the same vehicle, if we ignore the engine. Will this influence the other versions?
