Ford made a real “statement” by becoming one of the first mainstream manufacturers to venture into the world of downsizing. It also entered this game of small-displacement, high-performance powertrains with an engine that, to this day and since 2011, is still considered the best in its class.

The EcoBoost range arrived as a one-litre three-cylinder, although later came versions with four cylinders and displacements of 1,500, 1,600, 2,000 and 2,300 cubic centimetres, as well as V6s of 2.7 and 3.5 litres.

Since its launch, its small displacement, combined with various systems to reduce internal friction, as well as turbocharging and direct injection to improve its performance, have established it as the benchmark in the segment of compact and efficient engines.

The 1.0 EcoBoost has already won this prestigious title five times in a row. We have now learned that the prestigious jury of the International Engine of the Year has once again named it the best small-displacement engine. This is not the first time the small EcoBoost has won this award; in fact, it is the fifth consecutive time it has achieved it, having won it since the first edition in which it competed. In that 2012 edition it also won the title of “Best New Engine”.

The 1.0 EcoBoost first went on sale with 100 horsepower, but it is now available with 100, 125 and 140 horsepower, as well as a 180-horsepower version intended for the Ford Fiesta R2 rally car. The 140-horsepower production version is surprising, achieving a high power-to-displacement ratio (absolute power), even higher than that of well-known and fast models such as the Bugatti Veyron.

This one-litre three-cylinder, sold in more than 70 countries and which already accounts for 20% of the brand’s engines sold, can be fitted to all kinds of models in the Ford range, such as the Fiesta, the EcoSport, the B-MAX, the Focus, the Grand C-MAX, the C-MAX or even the §35§Ford Transit, to name a few examples.

The jury, made up of 65 specialist journalists from 31 different countries, tasked with scoring the various contenders for the title, has evaluated the most important aspects of any engine, namely: driving, performance, fuel economy and technology.
