The Avatr 11 SUV adds a range-extender variant in the Chinese market

The two available versions of the new Avatr 11 with a range extender are somewhat more affordable than those with a purely electric powertrain, and they also offer a greater range.

The Avatr brand, the result of a collaboration between Changan and CATL, has just introduced a major update affecting its Avatr 11 model. Originally launched as a pure battery electric vehicle, the Avatr 11 is now also offered in the Chinese market with an additional combustion engine that acts as a range extender.

With this new variant, the Avatr 11 becomes the brand’s second model available in both pure electric and EREV versions (electric with a range extender).

Thus, following in the footsteps of the Avatr 07 EREV, the Avatr 11 adopts the Kunlun extended-range system, integrating CATL’s Freevoy battery pack designed specifically for hybrid models, which offers a capacity of 39.05 kWh and a range of 225 kilometres without any intervention from the combustion engine. The manufacturer also claims that this battery pack is able to operate efficiently in extreme temperatures, from 35 degrees Celsius below zero up to 65 degrees Celsius, making this EREV variant one of the most versatile for use in a wide variety of climatic conditions.

Price and availability

The Avatr 11 EREV is available in the Chinese market in two versions, both with a single electric motor integrated into the rear axle, with prices ranging between 279,900 yuan (about 36,500 euros at the current exchange rate) and 299,900 yuan (about 39,000 euros), respectively. These EREV versions are therefore more affordable than the equivalent fully electric ones. The Avatr 11 with a pure electric powertrain is available in the Chinese market in three versions, with prices ranging from 339,900 yuan to 429,900 yuan.

In terms of performance, the EREV variant of the Avatr 11 can reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 6.9 seconds, and its top speed is limited to 200 km/h. Its fast charging also allows it to increase the state of charge from 30 to 80 per cent in just 15 minutes. According to the manufacturer, combining a full tank of fuel with a fully charged battery, the total estimated range is over a thousand kilometres under the Chinese CLTC homologation cycle.

With this new EREV variant, Avatr aligns itself with the dominant trend in the Chinese market of rounding out the range of electric models by adding range-extender alternatives, thus offering customers more affordable models that can also go further without relying on a fast-charging point.
