The electric version of the popular Toyota Hilux pickup will enter production in 2025

For the time being, it is unknown whether Toyota will sell the electric Hilux in other markets such as Europe, but it cannot be ruled out

It is now official: the version with an electric propulsion system of the Japanese manufacturer’s Hilux pickup will enter production next year at the company’s plant in Thailand. For now, everything points to all the units coming off the assembly line at that plant going to the local market, but Toyota has not ruled out launching sales in other markets later.

Although we still do not know all the details of this electric pickup’s technical specifications, the Japanese manufacturer announced some time ago that its goal was to offer a range of around 200 km, given that it is a vehicle used mainly by professionals in their day-to-day work who do not need to make long journeys. However, Toyota did not specify at that time under which homologation cycle these 200 km of range would be obtained.

In relation to this matter, Pras Ganesh, Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Asia, explained in statements to the media that offering more range in the electric Hilux would not make sense, since this would require increasing the size of the battery pack and, as a consequence, also the weight of the vehicle, thereby reducing the total cargo volume that can be carried.

The electric Toyota Hilux, which will probably receive the name Hilux Revo, will thus, according to some rumours, use the same 71.4 kWh battery pack that already equips the bZ4X. Although, as we say, this is only a rumour and has not been officially confirmed.

Isuzu will also launch a new electric pickup in 2025

The new Toyota pickup will not, moreover, be the only one to enter production in Thailand next year. Isuzu has also announced its intention to begin production of an electric version of the D-Max. The Japanese company has been producing the combustion-engine version of this popular pickup in this same country since 2002.

Isuzu has also revealed some of the main technical specifications of the future electric D-Max. Thus, we know that it will feature a battery pack with a capacity of 66.9 kWh, which will power its two electric motors. One of them, with 40 kW of power, is located on the front axle, while the rear axle motor delivers 90 kW, giving a combined power of 130 kW.

The electric Isuzu D-Max will, moreover, be somewhat heavier than the combustion-engine version, but despite this it will have the same maximum payload capacity of one tonne and will also be able to tow a trailer of up to 3.5 tonnes. What we do not know, however, is what the range of this electric pickup from the Japanese manufacturer will be. It is also unclear whether it will be sold in any market outside Thailand.
