The Enzo's successor will be a hybrid

It will be the first Ferrari model to feature the HY-KERS system and will go on sale next year. Its batteries will be partly developed by Samsung Electronics.

After the patents for a hybrid system developed by Ferrari leaked, we finally have statements on the matter. The CEO of the Modena-based manufacturer, Amadeo Felisa, true to his usual verbosity, could not resist commenting on details at the Beijing Auto Show, which is taking place these days. According to his statements in an interview with Automotive News, we will see it in 2013 in the form of the Enzo’s successor.

To the information we already reported on this system, which will be called ‘HY-KERS‘, new details can now be added, such as its weight. It will weigh 120 kilograms, so the engineers at Ferrari have already worked out how to offset it so the car keeps a total mass that allows it to retain its outrageous performance. And everything will revolve around an old friend of Ferrari: carbon fibre.

Amadeo Felisa has said that they will offset that mass increase in the vehicle by using the same amount of carbon as found in its Formula 1 car. Likewise, it will be a more modern type of fibre than the one used on the F50 or the Enzo, as it will offer greater strength and be lighter.

On the other hand, the lithium-ion cells for the capacitor that will power the auxiliary electric motor will be manufactured by Samsung Electronics. Their assembly into Ferrari’s own batteries will take place at the Formula 1 division’s facilities in Fiorano, Modena. According to the Italian marque, during performance testing the HY-KERS system has managed to reduce fuel consumption by 40%. And that’s not all: it also cuts three seconds from the time one of its models needs to go from 0 to 200 km/h.
