There are many driver assistance systems that are incorporated so that the driver can monitor at all times the various information the vehicle provides. Audi, true to its motto, “At the forefront of technology”, already has systems such as the on-board computer with efficiency program that provides information on the vehicle’s consumption and the various auxiliary systems, or the Audi drive select, which acts on the operation of the electromechanical power steering, cruise control, automatic gearbox, or air conditioning.

The latest system to arrive is the predictive efficiency assistant, which debuted on the Audi Q7 and is also included in the new Audi A4, both in the saloon and in the estate version, Avant, being a novelty in its category.

In 2011, Audi used the predictive function for the first time, which was based on navigation data. The MMI navigation plus fitted to an Audi A8, provided precise information to the adaptive cruise control, the lighting system and the automatic transmission, allowing these systems to anticipate the different conditions and situations that might arise during the journey.

Now, the predictive efficiency assistant is used to improve efficiency while driving. To do this, it works together with the MMI Navigation plus, adaptive cruise control and the camera-based traffic sign recognition system.

The driver only needs to activate adaptive cruise control and the system adjusts the speed taking into account the topography, speed limits and also the traffic. Bends, roundabouts, intersections, speed limits and entering or leaving towns are recognised by the system even before the driver can see them.

The information is received through the Audi virtual cockpit with detailed graphics, or via the head-up display, if the vehicle has this option. The system also warns the driver of situations in which it is advisable to slow down.

The predictive efficiency assistant is offered optionally as part of the Tour assistance package, which includes adaptive cruise control with stop&go function, traffic jam assist, Audi Active lane assist and Audi pre sense front systems, Audi turn assist and the traffic sign recognition system.

In the future this system will be especially important, above all by offering a function similar to the one already used by hybrid vehicles to switch off the engine when it is not needed. In 2012 Audi already presented this technology called iHEV (intelligent Hybrid Electric Vehicle), using a 48-volt lithium-ion battery responsible for supplying electrical power, when the engine is switched off, to the air conditioning or power steering, among other systems.
