The Toyota Mirai is passing through Málaga, but it hopes to establish itself permanently in Spain

The Toyota Mirai was presented in Málaga on the occasion of the XXI World Hydrogen Energy Congress. However, it will not yet be sold in Spain.

Technology is advancing at a rapid pace in the automotive world and we see this reflected in the latest creations from the brands. Toyota is a company that proclaims itself a pioneer in various forms of fuel, among which hybridisation and electric powertrains stand out. One of its greatest achievements came with the Prius at the end of the last century, as it was one of the first models to combine a petrol engine with an electric one. However, the Mirai aims to take the place of the hybrid saloon.

The Toyota Mirai is one of those vehicles that, when you look at it, you could mistake for a concept car, both for its daring styling and its advanced mechanics. This innovative model lives up to its name, which literally means “future” in Spanish, as it offers a set-up befitting a much more technologically advanced era. To showcase its capabilities, the Toyota Mirai travelled to Málaga for the XXI World Hydrogen Energy Congress, with the intention that anyone who approached could get to know the Japanese saloon first-hand.

This Toyota model uses hydrogen as its source of power and as an alternative both to petrol and to traditional hybridisation, thus making it a third fuel that will gradually establish itself over time. Its presence in Spain has allowed us to see first-hand how it works and how, little by little, we may see this technology taking centre stage in future models.

The Toyota Mirai has a hydrogen fuel cell that allows it to cover up to 500 km, a figure on a par with combustion vehicles. This is made possible by an electric motor inside the Japanese saloon, which means it produces no polluting emissions and, at the same time, offers significant savings for its owners.

Specifically, we find a powertrain capable of delivering 155 CV of power and 335 Nm of torque, figures sent directly to the front axle. These numbers represent performance very well suited to moving the Toyota Mirai as a whole and, at the same time, the Japanese manufacturer promises a full recharge in just 5 minutes, an outstanding time compared with the latest 100% electric models.

The Toyota Mirai’s visit to Málaga has certainly been very encouraging, yet it was only passing through, as its commercialisation in Spain has not yet taken place, something due to the small number of hydrogen refuelling stations. The Japanese company aims to promote this type of fuel gradually in our country and we are sure it won’t be long before we see the Mirai on our roads.
