The US market may not be suitable for plug-in hybrids, so Volkswagen wants to focus on electric cars

The arrival of the next decade offers the possibility that electric and hybrid cars will have their moment of glory around the world. Or perhaps not, because there are serious doubts about whether the US market is suitable for receiving an offer of plug-in hybrid vehicles. At least, this is what they think at Volkswagen, which has several electrified vehicles ready for this market, but does not consider the possibility that it may be a good idea, as they stated to Car and Driver.

It is a rather risky decision, since plug-in hybrids offer many of the benefits of an electric car, with the possibility of extending the range on a long journey without having to recharge the battery and with petrol. But apparently, US legislation does not allow tax benefits for this type of vehicle. This means that companies such as Volkswagen are considering launching their hybrid models, although they are launching fully electric cars.

Plug-in hybrids could also be a problem in the European market, since the intention is to make 100% electric vehicles truly popular and for the manufacturing cost to fall to more affordable levels for traditional users, something that Volkswagen wants to achieve by working on the technology and getting ahead of its competitors.

The only market that might welcome plug-in hybrid vehicles with enthusiasm could be China, which encourages the use of these cars. In Europe they could not have a good market either, due to the characteristics of this type of car. So only electric cars remain, although the brand knows that the profit margin is much lower than for other types of cars, but they prefer to adjust that profit margin and continue working to offer better electric cars. For the moment, according to the brand, they have been able to adjust the price of the I.D. Hatchback to achieve a margin similar to that of the Volkswagen Golf.
