Toyota would seek more joint projects with other brands following the success of the GT 86

The collaboration between Toyota and Subaru would give rise to another “collaborative” model with other brands, if the projects are as interesting as the one for the GT-86

The truth is that during the early stages of this joint project between Toyota and Subaru, which gave birth to the Toyota GT 86 and the Subaru BRZ, I didn’t think anything good would come of it, or at least nothing that would cause a media impact like the one the GT 86 has caused. Generally, when two brands of this calibre decide to carry out a joint collaboration project, the outcome is not immediate, it is not notable, or it is simply destined for failure, and months later we quietly learn that the agreement has been terminated.

After all, we are talking about two Japanese brands that needed a reference model no matter what, which has achieved good results among critics and enthusiasts. And it seems that Toyota is going to pursue future similar experiences, taking advantage of this agreement with Subaru.

For the time being, there is no other brand that is a candidate for a new project, but according to its project chief, Tetsuya Tada, there will be many candidates if a vehicle emerges to build “something truly exceptional” as a collaboration. For now, Toyota has all its antennas deployed to find a new joint project that interests it, having worked with other brands only on a handful of occasions throughout its history.

In parallel to the collaboration with Subaru, which has a convertible GT 86 as a future goal, Toyota also collaborates with the PSA group on the Toyota Aygo, the Japanese sibling of the Peugeot 107 and the Citroën C1.
