Volkswagen up! 2016: much better

Volkswagen launched, a few days before the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the update of the smallest model in its range, the up!.
With this restyling the up! gains appeal, improving its mechanical options and expanding an equipment list that had previously been too sparse.
The up! was born at the end of 2011 with the aim of carving out a place in the A-segment, at a time of strong growth in the European market. Thanks to synergies within the VW Group, this model was launched alongside two other versions customised by SEAT (the Mii) and Skoda, the Citygo.

Although it enjoyed relatively good sales in some countries, in other regions this model has never fully found its place, due to a selling price that was somewhat high for a model offered with two engines of 60 and 75 CV and an equipment list that, while sufficient, could not be described as “extensive”.
That is why, taking advantage of the Geneva Motor Show and considering that the model is roughly halfway through its commercial life, the people at Volkswagen have decided to give the model a further turn of the screw, improving it in all respects to a greater or lesser degree and producing a far more attractive product.
Externally, the new up! differs from its predecessor through a front bumper of new design, as well as slightly modified headlights that finally feature LED daytime running lights. New alloy wheels, larger and of new design, also debut, along with more attractive body colours. The mirrors now have integrated indicators. In addition, a new panoramic glass roof makes its debut.
At the rear, the light clusters have had their internal design modified and a bumper with a diffuser-style moulding that makes it more attractive is introduced.
Inside, the changes have focused on improving perceived quality and expanding an equipment list that until now was somewhat sparse for the model’s trendy aspirations. The dashboard design is the same, although the changes are evident. The instrument cluster is now the same as that of the Beetle, and the steering wheel is the same as the Golf’s.

The up! improves on the inside with more extensive equipment and better ergonomics.
The central part of the dashboard, which houses the climate controls and the sound system, is now slightly more angular. In addition, an automatic air conditioning system will be available as an option, while the sound system is updated to fit a colour screen and numerous connectivity options. The 2016 up! will also offer rain and light sensors (previously unavailable), improving some ergonomic details, such as the addition of two window switches on the driver’s door.
Mechanically, the 2016 up! receives a new engine that sits at the top of the range. Debuting in other models in the group, the small 1.0 TSI of 90 CV arrives in the up! to give more zest to the German city dweller. With this engine it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10 seconds with an average consumption of 4.2 litres per 100 km. We will get to know it in depth at the Geneva Motor Show.
