Were the arguments for the 110 km/h speed limit a huge lie?

Back to normal and driving at 120 km/h, because if you go any faster you’re a murderer, even if you’ve never harmed a fly. Behind all of this, the final results seem to fall well short of what the government had promised, according to some conclusions drawn by the Autopista website.
The first question arises from how much money the state has actually saved by forcing us to drive at 110. They had announced savings of 1,150 million euros, but it seems they have fallen a little short. According to the Interior Minister, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, the final savings amounted to 450 million.
Savings in fuel consumption remain an unknown, since no real figures have been given, and the crisis has been forcing people to save for over two years now, with fuel prices already hovering around 1.4 euros per litre of petrol.
The reduction in fines, an argument the government defended tooth and nail, has not been the case at all; quite the opposite. According to the statistical bulletin of the Guardia Civil itself, between March and April more than 16 percent more fines were issued than between January and February. And, incidentally, fines were not cheaper under the old 110 limit; they were actually more expensive.
As for whether accidents have been reduced or not, it must be taken into account that the limit applied to motorways and dual carriageways, not to secondary roads, where the legal limit is 100 km/h. Yet, paradoxically, three-quarters of accidents occur on secondary roads…
