With Madrid 360, cars with an A label will find it even harder to drive around the city

Madrid 360 is the city council’s new project to improve air quality by tackling the problem from several fronts

The new plan to improve air quality, Madrid 360, aims to reduce by up to 20 percent the amount of the notorious nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 2023.

To achieve this, the City Council led by Martínez-Almeida intends to tackle the reduction of gases harmful to health by launching a plan that includes eliminating coal-fired boilers by 2022 and reducing diesel ones, limiting emissions from the Valdemingomez urban solid waste incineration plant, or banning the circulation of vehicles classified with the A environmental badge from the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT).

On the other hand, construction solutions are proposed, such as creating more green areas or new park-and-ride car parks, promoting the use of bicycles, motorcycles or alternative transport, which includes a public charging network for electric vehicles, economic incentives to renew the local vehicle fleet, both for companies, SMEs and private individuals, but it also includes the possibility of allowing vehicles with the C environmental badge with high occupancy to access the entire low-emission zone.

Madrid 360 puts a stop to the use of A-labelled vehicles

If we stick to the mobility aspects we cover at Top10Motor, the new project known as Madrid 360, which replaces Madrid Central, on the one hand, becomes even more restrictive towards the circulation of vehicles with petrol cars manufactured before 2000 or diesel cars before 2006 which, even though there is no A environmental badge, are classified as such.

For these, Madrid 360 will ban parking in the central area for these cars from 1 January 2020, except for residents of the neighbourhood.

Two years later, from 1 January 2022, non-resident cars with an A label will be prohibited from entering and driving within the M-30.

The same date in 2023 will mark the entry into force of the ban on the circulation of A-classified vehicles of non-residents on the M-30 ring road itself.

In 2024, from 1 January, no A-type vehicle from outside Madrid will be allowed to drive on any road in the city.

And by 2025 the situation becomes more complicated for owners of A-type vehicles, as from 1 January it will be prohibited to drive an A vehicle within the municipality of Madrid, whether or not its driver is a resident or a visitor to the city.

Madrid 360 will drive the renewal of the local vehicle fleet

Taxi MadridOne of the most frequently repeated requests from the various groups affected by car sales is to encourage the purchase of new cars, which, in addition to boosting household spending, reduces the environmental impact of car use.

Like other cities or autonomous communities, the municipality of Madrid will launch a renewal plan for private or professional-use cars with up to 25 million euros in annual aid to encourage the purchase of cars with the ZERO, ECO or even C label.

For goods vehicles, up to 10 million euros each year will be allocated to renewing the fleet used for freight transport.

The taxi sector will also see up to 5 million euros a year allocated from the budget to renew the fleets of this trade.
