The Xpeng GX is the new flagship of the Chinese brand, with a range extender that will give it a range of 1,000 kilometres.

In China, they are taking seriously the need to offer electric vehicles with a high range. And that has led them to develop several models that work with a range extender. One of these models is the one presented by the Xpeng brand, which has just unveiled its new flagship, the Xpeng GX.

This large SUV offers six seats, in which you can travel comfortably. It has a length of 5.2 metres and has been designed to offer a refined look and an attractive, dynamic image. The model is set to be presented at the Beijing Motor Show, which will take place at the end of April.

One of the features of this model is that, although it is electric, it has a combustion engine whose purpose is to generate the electricity that is stored in the battery. A range extender that offers the possibility of a total range of just over 1,000 kilometres.

An attractive design

The exterior of the Xpeng GX offers an elegant and attractive look. The floating roof, the horizontal lines and the champagne-coloured finish visible in the images make it a rather interesting car that may well appeal to both Chinese and European buyers, should it ever reach our market.

At the front, very slim-profile headlights stand out, and the doors feature concealed handles, which give it a very modern appearance. The LED light strip running the full width of the tailgate also contributes to this.

Drive system

One of the things that attracts the most attention in this model is the Kunpeng Super Electric System drive system. It was developed by the brand itself and consists of an internal combustion engine, which works as a generator; a medium-sized battery; and an electric motor that drives the vehicle.

The range extender is nothing new, but each brand has improved the system and adapted it to the needs of its models. The system is becoming popular in China, although in Europe it is not yet popular, and there is much debate about the suitability of having a combustion engine to charge the electric battery.

China is seeing a technological battle in electric mobility. Some companies are working on this system, while others are focusing on high-capacity batteries and a broad, fast-charging infrastructure to keep batteries available at all times.
