Citroën announces that the C3 is now available with the Hybrid 100 engine featuring MHEV technology

The Citroën C3 expands its engine range with the new Hybrid 100 version, featuring mild-hybrid technology, which earns it the ECO label from the DGT

The B-segment is one of the most popular among drivers and, consequently, one of the most hotly contested among manufacturers. It is the segment where compact models aimed mainly at urban environments compete, and in it brands such as Citroën go head to head with models like the C3. The C3 has not been doing badly at all: for example, in May of this year it was the best-selling model in Spain, helping to place the brand in the top 5.

The Citroën C3 is therefore a very important model for the brand, and it obviously needs to be offered with an attractive range of options in order to attract the greatest possible number of customers. Until now, the C3 was offered only with the petrol engine of three cylinders and 1,200 cc PureTech with an output of 100 CV; while if our mobility is practically restricted to the city, we could also opt for the electric version, the ë-C3, with a 113 CV motor and a range of 291 kilometres on the WLTP cycle.

Now the Citroën C3 will be able to reach many more customers, especially those who need or are looking for an urban vehicle with an ECO label to move around large cities, since alongside the engines mentioned above we now also have the Hybrid 100, which uses mild-hybrid (MHEV) technology at 48 V. A strategic engine choice that the C3 badly needed, given that it represents 15% of its category.

For the Hybrid 100 version we have the same three-cylinder 1,200 cc petrol engine, which delivers 100 CV, combined with a 48 V electric motor and a six-speed ëDCS6 dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Under normal conditions both powertrains work together to optimise driving and energy consumption at all times, while during acceleration the electric motor provides an extra boost for overtaking with confidence and, when braking, the electric motor takes the opportunity to recharge the battery.

In theory, the range in fully electric mode will be at best just 1 kilometre, although by using this MHEV technology sensibly on urban journeys we can run more than 50% in fully electric mode. Moreover, thanks to this, CO2 emissions are roughly 10% lower compared with a combustion engine of similar characteristics, and as I mentioned earlier, we will have the ECO label on our windscreen to access low-emission zones without any problems.
