Porsche Taycan: the first electric sports car from Porsche
The speculation is over: the first electric sports car from Porsche, based on the Mission E prototype, will be called Porsche Taycan
That the first purely electric sports car from Porsche would be based on the Mission E prototype is something the brand had already made clear. That the official name would not be that was also an open secret. Now, the Stuttgart-based marque reveals the definitive name of its first electric car: Porsche Taycan.
Derived from the Mission E prototype, the first electric Porsche will be called Taycan. It will be followed by an SUV based on the Mission E Cross Turismo
The announcement was made as part of the celebration of Porsche’s 70th anniversary of building sports cars, on the same day the Porsche 911 Speedster Concept was unveiled, the “little gift” the brand has given itself to commemorate this anniversary. The explanation for why this name was chosen – there is always an explanation for everything – is that the translation of this term refers to a spirited steed, in reference to the one that has appeared on the Porsche crest since 1952.

For some time now, at Porsche they have chosen names that, according to the brand, have a specific connection with the model: Boxster combines the roadster design with the boxer engine; Cayman and Cayenne suggest ferocity; Panamera has its origin in the Panamericana, the famous long-distance race; and Macan derives from the Indonesian word describing the tiger.
What we know about the Porsche Taycan
In any case, what matters about the first electric car from Porsche is not where the name comes from, but what this model will offer. And the Porsche Taycan will not disappoint those who look for what you expect from a Porsche, regardless of the propulsion system. With two electric motors, it will offer a maximum output of more than 600 CV (440 kW), allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds.

The top speed will be limited, as in all electric cars, to protect battery life. But Porsche announces that the Taycan will need less than 12 seconds to reach 200 km/h. And that the range will exceed 500 km, figures still according to the NEDC cycle. It will be somewhat less under the WLTP cycle, which is more realistic.
To prepare for the production of the Porsche Taycan, the brand is already building a new paint shop and a dedicated assembly area in Zuffenhausen, in addition to expanding the engine plant and the body shop. Its arrival will mean an increase of 1,200 employees. And what comes next: Porsche has already announced its electrification plans, which include investing more than 6,000 million euros in electromobility until 2022.

Now, we just have to wait for Porsche to name its first electric SUV, which will arrive after the Taycan, derived from the Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo, presented at the last Frankfurt Motor Show, and which will share its platform and propulsion system with the Porsche Taycan.
