The highly anticipated De Tomaso P72 will feature a supercharged Ford V8 engine capable of delivering 710 CV of power, the same as the Ford GT from 2015.

De Tomaso has just announced the details of the powertrain that will drive its next sports car, the P72, which pays tribute to the legendary De Tomaso Pantera. This striking sports car made its public debut during the past Goodwood Festival of Speed.

It is important to highlight that the revived carmaker has collaborated with Roush on the development of a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine from the oval brand for the new P72. The power output of this engine has been set at more than 710 CV and more than 825 Nm of peak torque.

De Tomaso has confirmed that the P72’s bespoke engine will be fitted with a dry-sump lubrication system, accompanied by a new state-of-the-art turbo that will provide better thermal efficiency, higher speeds and a much smoother drive.

In addition, the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine will retain the characteristics of a naturally aspirated unit, offering a linear power curve and the typical American soundtrack of the old-school V8s.

The engine is also expected to be revved to more than 7,500 rpm, and the only transmission option will be a six-speed manual gearbox.

De Tomaso has also worked extensively to minimise any noise coming from the turbocharger, while meeting emissions requirements in the United States and Europe.

The exhaust system of the De Tomaso P72 is described as “symphonic”, using the engine’s cross-plane acoustics to create a truly special experience. “The soundtrack of the De Tomaso P72 takes you back in time, as if you were on the starting grid at Le Mans in 1966,” the company said in its press release.

The De Tomaso P72 continues the brand’s historical relationship with Ford, which began in 1963 with the Vallelunga, a mid-engined GT powered by a four-cylinder Ford Cortina engine.

Performance figures are not yet available, but the company promises to release videos and audio clips of the De Tomaso P72 in the coming months. Only 72 units will be built, with prices starting from 750,000 euros.

The iconic Italian marque is being relaunched by the same team behind Apollo Automobili, Ideal Team Ventures, ITV, which acquired the De Tomaso rights in 2014.

The new De Tomaso P72 is officially inspired by the prototype known as the P70, which never came to fruition, a collaboration project between Alejandro De Tomaso and Carroll Shelby dating back to 1964.

The lines of the new De Tomaso P72 captivate everyone, and its endless curves are mesmerising. The sports car’s cabin appears to be made of jewels, with bright copper and polished diamond details found throughout, from the round analogue clocks to the centre of the steering wheel and the gear lever for the manual transmission with its exposed linkage.
