The most powerful four-cylinder engine in the world is from Mercedes-AMG, internally designated M139, and produces 421 hp.

The most powerful four-cylinder engine in the world comes from Mercedes-AMG. It produces 421 hp in its S version and 387 hp in its base version. The series-production four-cylinder, 2.0-litre engine is internally designated M139 and will debut in the next ’45’ model range.
This new powerplant, which has become the most powerful in the world, is intended to replace the engine currently used in the Mercedes-AMG A45, the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 and the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45.

Mercedes-AMG surpasses its predecessor, the M133 engine, which had held the lead until now, by 40 hp. The peak torque of the most powerful four-cylinder engine in the world has also increased, reaching up to 500 Nm. This new engine delivers up to 211 hp per litre of displacement.
The new high-performance supercharged engine from Mercedes-AMG “outperforms the powerplants of many supercars from renowned brands. The new high-efficiency engine is manufactured in Affalterbach, on an innovative production line, following the principle of One Man, One Engine.

Alongside its new power figures, the new heart of Mercedes-AMG also “stands out for its spontaneous response”. This is made possible by the harmonised torque curve. “Thanks to this sizing, AMG engineers have achieved a power delivery similar to that of a naturally aspirated engine, which results in an even more exhilarating driving experience. The engine specialists have chosen a torque curve with dynamic build-up in the low rev range, which clearly improves the car’s driving characteristics. The increase in torque at high revs enhances the engine’s agility. Another factor that underlines the sporty character of the M139 engine is its maximum speed, which reaches 7,200 rpm”.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG, has stated that “with the precursor of this engine we have managed to set a benchmark in the segment. The challenge set at the start of the development project for a completely new four-cylinder engine was therefore to surpass the figures of the segment leader. We have achieved this through the introduction of numerous solutions, some of them revolutionary. The M139 once again demonstrates in an impressive way the high level of competence of Mercedes-AMG in engine development. Along with the power per litre of displacement, which is exceptional for a supercharged engine, another factor that demonstrates the development potential of internal combustion engines is their high efficiency”.
It is important to note that the new Mercedes-AMG engine is assembled entirely by hand. Emmerich Schiller, COO and member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG, has pointed out that “for the assembly of the M 139 we have once again reinvented the principle of One Man, One Engine. The result is a state-of-the-art production facility focused on the people who work in the plant. We have created optimal working conditions in a bright, clean environment with a precise organisation of all sequences. This creates the perfect foundation for guaranteeing our high quality standards despite the increasing complexity of the technology.”
