The wait is over: BMW has finally revealed the new X1, which arrives with a major technological overhaul, alongside the 100% electric iX1

We had been hearing rumours and seeing spy photos for quite some time, speculating about what the new generation of the BMW X1 would look like, and at last the wait is over. The new generation of the German brand’s entry-level SUV range is shown in full and, although it does not bring a major design change, it does make significant progress in other areas such as technology and connectivity.

Exterior design of the new BMW X1

As has become customary with most of BMW’s recent presentations, the new X1 features a front end with a grille in which its characteristic “kidneys” have grown in size, while on either side a new LED light cluster gives it a more aggressive and sharper look. Its headlights can optionally be replaced by Matrix LED units with dynamic indicators and variable light beam. Lower down we find the bumper, with a large central air intake and very pronounced lines, especially on the sides, where aerodynamic fins are located.

Looking at the sides, this is where we see how the new BMW X1 has grown for this generation, now measuring a total length of 4,500 mm, which translates into more space and comfort for its occupants. We can also see the waistline, now positioned higher, as well as the new wheel arch design and the 17-inch alloy wheels fitted as standard. The rear is perhaps the area that goes least noticed, but that does not stop it from having a new rear light cluster and bumper, along with the discreet yet eye-catching spoiler above the rear window.

As is usual with BMW, the new X1 can also show off its different personalities through the trim levels available, with the xLine for those seeking greater refinement and the M Sport trim to emphasise a more sporty character. On top of this come the various body colours available, with up to 12 colours for its bodywork, as well as the wheel designs, which can optionally increase in size up to 18 and 19 inches.

Interior of the new BMW X1

If the exterior is a good example of BMW evolving its design without great flamboyance, the interior is quite the opposite, with the brand focusing on noticeably improving the quality of the materials, their design and, of course, their technological equipment. As a result, when we open the doors we find a cabin that debuts new seats, which can optionally be upholstered in perforated Sensatec or Vernasca leather.

Once seated at the driver’s position, the new dashboard immediately catches the eye, featuring a 10.25-inch screen as the instrument cluster and another 10.7-inch screen for the infotainment system and other functions, both sitting in a single unit that gives the impression of just one screen. The centre console has been completely reworked with a minimalist design, with only the essential buttons at the height of the central armrest, making it look like an extension of it. Meanwhile, in the rear, the three seats can be folded in a 40:20:40 configuration, behind which lies a 540-litre boot that expands to 1,600 litres when the seats are folded down.

In terms of technology, its occupants benefit from an extensive range of features, even as standard equipment, including, for example, the BMW Live Cockpit Plus with BMW 8 operating system, the latest generation of the BMW iDrive system, connectivity via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, as well as numerous driver assistance and safety systems such as adaptive cruise control, frontal collision warning, parking assistant and reversing assistant.

Engines of the new BMW X1

As with other models from the German brand, BMW has also used the X1 to bring electrification to its engine range, with all engines now fitted with 48 V mild hybrid MHEV technology, whether petrol or diesel, and within the range there are also plug-in hybrid versions offering greater electric range than the MHEV combustion engines.

For now, BMW has confirmed that the new X1 will be available from launch with the sDrive 18i petrol engine producing 136 CV and 230 Nm of torque and, on the diesel side, the sDrive 18d with 150 CV and 360 Nm. Those who prefer plug-in hybrid versions can opt for the xDrive 25e with 245 CV and 477 Nm of torque or the more performance-oriented xDrive 30e with 326 CV and 477 Nm of torque. Regardless of the engine chosen, the gearbox will be an automatic 7-speed Steptronic.

100% electric variant: the BMW iX1

Alongside the new generation of the BMW X1, the all-new iX1 has also been presented, the eco-friendly and fully electric version of the small German SUV. As you might imagine, the two share many similarities, except that, for example, the exterior features, in addition to the logos, some elements painted in the characteristic electric blue that BMW applies to its fully electric variants, as well as specific interior functions related to the electric system.

The BMW iX1 will be available from launch in the xDrive 30 version, which combines an electric motor on the front axle and another on the rear axle to deliver a total power output of 313 CV and 494 Nm of torque. As part of this system, the iX1 is equipped with a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 64.7 kWh, allowing it a maximum range of 438 kilometres according to the WLTP test cycle, as well as a top speed limited to 180 km/h.

The new BMW X1 is expected to be available in the Spanish market from next October with the two MHEV engines described above, with the two plug-in hybrid variants and the fully electric iX1 joining later. For details on its equipment and pricing specifically for the Spanish market, we will still have to wait a little longer.
