Renault Smart Twingo Electric Cars Urban
The new Renault Twingo electric could share a platform with the Renault #2
The new Renault Twingo electric should reach the market in 2026, shortly after the planned launch of the Renault #2, so timing-wise it seems possible
French media are these days picking up on a rumour suggesting that the new Renault Twingo electric will share a platform with the Renault #2 and probably also with the future Dacia Sandero electric.
Last September these same media announced the market launch of the Renault #2 in 2025, an urban electric that will replace the current smart Fortwo. The rumour they now refer to suggests that, for Renault to be able to sell the future Twingo electric for less than 20,000 euros, as it has promised, the French manufacturer is obliged to reach an agreement with Geely so that both models are produced together in the same plant, just as happens with its predecessors’ current generation.

These media assure that contacts already exist between the two manufacturers, with the aim of reaching an agreement that would allow them to share costs. However, officially, when Renault representatives are asked about this matter, their answer is always negative.
Sharing a platform and a production plant would undoubtedly reduce costs
If the claims of the French media turn out to be true, everything points to the new Renault Twingo electric and the Renault #2 sharing the AmpR Small platform, previously known as CMF-BEV, with production of both models taking place at the Slovenian Novo Mesto plant from 2026. A couple of years later, in 2028, the new Dacia Sandero electric, which would use the same platform, could also come out of this same plant.
Some sceptics of the French media’s claims point out, however, that although the current generation of the Twingo was developed jointly with smart and has a lot in common with the smart Forfour, many things have changed since then. smart has gone from being a second brand of Mercedes-Benz focused on urban mobility to becoming a joint venture of the German firm alongside the Chinese giant Geely.

In any case, although this is undoubtedly entirely true, it is also the case that the relationship between Geely and Renault is very good. The Chinese giant recently acquired 34 percent of Renault Korea Motors and intends for this company to be responsible for producing the Renault 4 in South Korea.
On the other hand, it must also be taken into account that Geely uses the SEA platform in all its electric models. This is the one used, for example, by the Zeekr 001 or the Zeekr 007. However, some experts point out that using this platform in a vehicle like the Renault #2 would increase costs excessively and prevent it from being sold at a competitive price. The solution to this problem could precisely be the use of the Renault platform.
