The next Subaru WRX STI could bring back the two-door coupé configuration
More than 20 years after it was introduced as a sports coupé, a new two-door Subaru WRX STI could become a reality
And this is what the Japanese outlet Best Car Web is suggesting, something that fans of the legendary model may find just as exciting as they find worrying.
This is because, from the outset, the Subaru Impreza WRX was introduced on the GC8 body as a derivative of the four-door saloon, offering a sports coupé configuration the brand had never offered before.
From the Subaru Impreza World Rally eXperimental, hence the initials WRX, came exceptional models such as the Subaru Impreza WRX STI P1 or 22B, whose limited units are cared for and maintained as the fine collector’s pieces they are.
Be that as it may, in 2000 the new generation of the model went back to the four-door body for three generations, because in 2008 the foundations of the purists were violently shaken by the presentation of the Subaru WRX and STI in their compact configuration.
The Subaru Impreza hatchback had five doors and included the boot space within the cabin. That decision to produce the WRX and WRX STI as compacts was corrected with the production of the Subaru WRX STI My2011, which had its own separate boot, a trend that has continued up to the farewell of the current, soon-to-be-discontinued generation of this rally legend.
The new Toyo-baru Super AWD
But now, according to our Japanese colleagues, the synergy of the renewed agreement between Subaru and Toyota could mean the reinvention of the icon, beyond whatever new engine it might house under the bonnet.
In fact, the new agreement between the two brands would produce a new compact car with all-wheel drive and high performance, the result of the alliance between the manufacturers, something similar to the already veteran pair of twins Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86 born at the company’s facilities, the firm that takes the Pleiades constellation as its brand image in Gunma Prefecture.
The new “super compact” would be an all-wheel-drive car with power similar to that of the current WRX STI (300 CV and 420 Nm of torque) with full, symmetrical all-wheel drive, the identity hallmark of Subaru together with its boxer engines, inspired by the Toyota Yaris WRC and by the brand that recently won the drivers’ title thanks to Ott Tänak and his co-driver Martin Järveoja, a car that, in concept and styling, could very much recall the aforementioned compact Subaru WRX STI of 2008.
The Subaru WRX STI FA24
On the other hand, the future of the Subaru WRX STI seems assured on the basis of the farewell of the brand’s traditional EJ20 engine in a transition towards engines with more restrained consumption and emissions than current ones.
On one hand, the Subaru WRX would have an improved configuration of the generic power of the FA20 block, but with a CVT gearbox modified for sporting use.
On the other, the variant that the Subaru Tecnica International department (better known by its initials, STI) will bring to light would take a turbocharged FA24-type block coupled to a 6-speed gearbox.
If so, the new flagship of the brand’s sports saloons should offer more than the 300 CV it already provides and that its sibling, the “super compact”, would reach, so it is quite feasible that the new WRX STI, especially if some form of electric assistance is confirmed that would allow it to be homologated as a hybrid, could reach 400 CV of power for the first time.
