The Toyota Highlander goes electric to drive on US roads
The Toyota Highlander is updated for the US market with an electric drive system featuring two battery packs and all of today’s comfort.

The Toyota Highlander is updated and advances its range of sustainable powertrains. So much so that the new version of the Highlander features electric motorisation, while retaining its other characteristics: space, practicality and driving experience. The design has been improved and updated, the seven-seat capacity has been maintained, and its drive system has been modified.
For now, we know the versions that will be sold in the United States. The first is called XLE and is available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, with two battery packs. The second version is called Limited and is only available with all-wheel drive.

The versions of the Toyota Highlander
The Toyota Highlander XLE with a single motor uses a 77 kWh battery, and its electric motor delivers 221 CV and a maximum torque of 268 Nm. The battery charge allows it to travel up to 462 kilometres on a single charge. In the case of two motors, the power increases to 339 CV and torque to 445 Nm, but range drops to 435 kilometres.

The XLE’s second battery offers a capacity of 95.8 kWh, which allows it to achieve a range of up to 515 kilometres in the all-wheel-drive model. This battery is also available in the Limited trim and records the same figures. These figures are registered under the EPA cycle, which is the one used in the United States.
The batteries are compatible with the NACS standard, which allows it to reach 80% of its capacity with a DC charge. It also has V2L (Vehicle to Load) capability, meaning it can power devices outside the car.
On-board technology
The Toyota Highlander is equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 driver assistance system. These systems include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and active lane-keeping assist. The infotainment system is controlled through a 14-inch central screen. The instrument display screen measures 12.3 inches.
The seats are heated, as is the steering wheel. It also offers specific off-road driving modes, and a low-speed crawl control improves the vehicle’s handling overall.
The batteries will be produced at the US plant in Liberty, North Carolina. The model will begin assembly at the Georgetown, Kentucky plant at the end of this year, with first deliveries expected before 2027. For now, it must be tested in extreme temperature conditions and checked for how the battery responds to high and low temperatures.
