BMW is reportedly working on the development of an i4 convertible for 2028

The new all-electric i4 Cabrio will coexist with the current combustion-engined 4 Series convertible on the market for at least a year.

Shortly after the definitive removal of the i4 Gran Coupé from BMW’s line-up, the Bavarian brand is preparing to launch a new model, which this time appears to be a convertible. Internal sources suggest that the project, known under the code NA3, will be developed on the Neue Klasse architecture, the same platform already used by the new iX3. The first spy images have begun to circulate, and internal sources assure that the project is progressing at a good pace.

This new convertible, scheduled for 2028, is conceived as a lifestyle vehicle with four seats and a classic fabric roof, in line with the current combustion 4 Series Cabrio. Being born as a pure electric car, BMW is no longer bound by the constraints of combustion engines, which will allow shorter overhangs and, potentially, a more generous wheelbase. In this way, a roomier cabin and greater comfort on board are to be expected, despite keeping its exterior dimensions contained.

The exterior design will favour a closed front end, aerodynamic wheels and a radically simplified interior. With this model, the Bavarian brand intends to reaffirm its commitment to a niche segment but with a high profit margin, all after having withdrawn several roadsters and convertibles in recent years. In a first phase, the i4 Cabrio will coexist with its combustion sibling, the 4 Series Cabrio (G23), whose production in Dingolfing will continue until mid-2029.

The spy photos reveal that the prototype already carries almost final body panels, although it still uses provisional lighting units. The final light signature will align with that of the new i3. Details such as red brake calipers hint at sporty versions, probably with the M Sport package. It remains to be seen whether there will be a dedicated M variant, although it would not be surprising if there were.

In the cabin, the i4 Cabrio will inherit the minimalism of the rest of the Neue Klasse models, using fewer physical buttons and including a new control system that replaces the traditional iDrive rotary controller. The result will be a clean cockpit, inspired by that of the i3 saloon, but adapted to the philosophy of a convertible.

Finally, it should be noted that, according to the same internal sources, at least a year will separate the end of production of the current i4 Gran Coupé from the arrival of the electric convertible on the market. The new i4 Cabrio will also share much of its technical base with the i3 saloon and its i3 Touring estate variant.
