BMW plans to start producing the iX3 and i3 in Mexico from 2027

Production of the Neue Klasse models from BMW will take place at four centres worldwide, and San Luis Potosí will be one of them.

From 2027, BMW will produce the electric i3 and iX3 of the Neue Klasse at its Mexican plant in San Luis Potosí. The Bavarian company also plans to build, at the same site, new facilities dedicated to assembling sixth-generation high-voltage batteries. The total planned investment amounts to 800 million euros, according to the most recent reports.

The adaptation of the Mexican plant to meet these goals is progressing as planned. BMW had already announced in 2023 that it would manufacture Neue Klasse electric vehicles in that country from 2027, although until now it had not specified which models. On the tenth anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the San Luis Potosí plant, the company finally confirmed that they would be the i3 and the iX3.

The expansion project at the San Luis Potosí plant exceeds 110,000 square metresBmw I3 Munich 00001 and will allow production of both electric models to begin in 2027. More than 500 million euros of the total investment is earmarked for a new high-voltage battery assembly centre. This facility will occupy more than 80,000 square metres and will be responsible for assembling sixth-generation battery packs.

Global production

San Luis Potosí thus joins Debrecen in Hungary, Munich in Germany and Shenyang in China as

one of the four global production centres chosen by the BMW Group to produce Neue Klasse vehicles

. In addition, this Mexican plant is one of the five sites worldwide designated for assembling the company’s sixth-generation high-voltage batteries.

It is important to point out that production of the i3 and iX3 at the San Luis Potosí plant is not aimed exclusively at the North American market, but is conceived as a global export hub. According to the company itself, the plant was designed from the outset to take advantage of Mexico’s many trade agreements and to ship vehicles to every country with which Mexico has agreements. Currently, between 30 and 42 per cent of the plant’s total output is destined for the United States, while the rest is distributed among some 80 markets, including China, which receives up to 40 per cent of the output of certain specific models. The majority of production, around 96 per cent, is exported.
