DAF begins series production of its XD and XF electric trucks

Although two and a half years behind the timeline initially announced by the Dutch manufacturer, DAF’s new XD and XF Electric trucks are about to hit European roads.

DAF Trucks has just announced that series production of its XD and XF electric trucks has already begun at its Eindhoven plant in the Netherlands. Both models, designed for the distribution sector and with options for long-haul freight transport, represent an important step forward for the brand in its commitment to sustainable transport.

The Dutch manufacturer’s XD and XF Electric trucks are based on the new generations of the XD and XF series, originally with combustion engines, but they have been developed from scratch with electrification in mind. The XD Electric is aimed at distribution transport, with a design that improves visibility thanks to larger windscreen and windows. Meanwhile, the XF Electric, although also focused on distribution, can also be configured for long-distance routes, reaching up to 500 km of range with its higher-capacity battery.

Both models incorporate Paccar EX-D1 (170-270 kW) and EX-D2 (270-350 kW) electric motors, combined with a three-speed ZF transmission. In the final development phase, DAF increased peak torque to 1,500 Nm on the EX-D1 and to 2,400 Nm on the EX-D2, thereby optimising performance.

Technical specifications to consider

The compact design with planetary gears allows high efficiency by activating only one motor under partial loads and the second in situations of higher demand, such as acceleration or mountainous terrain. This reduces weight compared with conventional transmissions, benefiting cargo payload capacity.

Furthermore, these trucks are equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, with capacities of 210 to 525 kWh, offering ranges of between 200 and 500 km and supporting fast charging of up to 325 kW. An 80 per cent charge can be reached in 45 minutes with two battery packs, or two hours with five battery packs installed. These liquid-cooled batteries come with an eight-year warranty. The trucks also offer an optional 22 kW AC charger.

Initially, DAF will launch these models as 4×2 tractor units and rigid chassis trucks, with 6×2 configurations for greater capacity and manoeuvrability, and plans to introduce more variants in 2026. Production takes place on a dedicated assembly line in Eindhoven, where the electric components and batteries are integrated, the latter manufactured on a parallel production line.
