MG Motor plans to market battery-electric vehicles with semi-solid-state batteries in Europe this year

These semi-solid-state batteries that MG Motor plans to integrate into its vehicles offer some important advantages over conventional ones.

MG Motor, the British brand under the control of Chinese giant SAIC, has just opened a new engineering centre in the German city of Frankfurt, where it presented its innovative semi-solid battery called SolidCore. This innovative battery technology, developed with the specific needs of the European market in mind, will begin to be implemented in MG Motor electric vehicles destined for the European market before the end of the year.

The new German centre is part of the company’s “In Europe, for Europe” strategy, an approach that reverses the usual logic of the sector. While European companies tend to talk about “In China, for China“, Chinese manufacturers have traditionally developed their own technologies in their home country and then brought them to Europe.

This new centre in Frankfurt will be dedicated to developing vehicles adapted to the specific conditions of European customers, taking into account the regional climate, road characteristics and driving styles typical of the continent.

A major leap forward

According to the company, its new SolidCore battery represents an important advance in battery technology for electric vehicles. It incorporates solid-state electrolytes that generate a protective structure inside the cell, although it still uses liquid electrolyte components, so it is a semi-solid solution and not a fully solid one. MG Motor especially highlights its performance in low-temperature conditions, allowing superior vehicle performance without the need for preheating and offering better acceleration response compared to conventional electric vehicles.

The British brand takes pride in being the first with plans to mass-produce this type of semi-solid battery in the short term, and has not missed the opportunity to highlight its greater safety and durability, although for now it has not provided specific numerical data on range, charging times or exact improvements.

Mg Hybrid+

Beyond the development of these innovative batteries, MG Motor is also making notable advances in its hybrid technology. Its Hybrid+ system incorporates a 1.83 kWh battery, a novel three-speed hybrid transmission, an integrated control unit with real-time terrain detection and up to eight intelligent driving modes.

With all these innovations, MG Motor seeks to consolidate its presence in Europe by employing technological solutions truly adapted to the demands and preferences of the European customer.
