New Opel Mokka 2021: the boldest SUV, from 18,500 euros

A first static hands-on look at the new Opel Mokka lets us tell you what we liked most, as well as analyse the prices and discounts for the Spanish market.

2020 Opel Mokka & Mokka E

We won’t have to wait long to drive it, but we’ve been able to get a first static hands-on look at the new Opel Mokka and learn more about its price, equipment and discounts for the Spanish market.

Let’s remember that the new Mokka 2021 already accepts reservations and can be configured on the brand’s website, although the first units won’t reach dealerships until the first few months of 2021. We have already detailed the engine range of the new Opel Mokka. We have also dedicated a specific article, analysing its details and prices, to the new Opel Mokka-e, which exceeds 9,000 euros in discounts by taking advantage of the Moves Plan.

What we liked most about the new Opel Mokka

The new Opel Mokka, which replaces the Mokka X, is the first Opel to incorporate the brand’s new design language, characterised by the front end known as the “Opel Vizor”. It is also the first from the brand to feature the new logo and the spectacular “Pure Panel” driving position with two huge digital screens. And the first Opel to offer, from the outset, both petrol versions and a 100% electric variant. Not bad at all.

The impression when seeing it in person is of a bold and provocative car, especially with the finishes featuring two-tone paint. Here, Opel takes a step ahead of the competition by offering the option of choosing a contrasting colour – red, black or white – not just for the roof. The bonnet can also be in the roof colour. And the upper line running along the window area, in a third contrasting colour, which is red with a black or white roof, and white when the roof is black.

Two-tone finish also for the bonnet

I’m not entirely convinced by the black bonnet, perhaps because the grille is also black, so the result looks a bit “like a mask”. But surely many customers will choose this option. What you need to know is that the contrasting bonnet costs 400 euros, and it is only available on the best-equipped versions.

Setting that aside, I really liked the customisation of the GS Line versions, which give the car a very youthful and sporty look. They are distinguished by three-tone alloy wheels, two-tone paint as standard, black trim pieces (on the Ultimate they are chrome) and specific upholstery inside, where red accents are also added to the dashboard.

We couldn’t measure it, but despite being 12.5 centimetres shorter than the Mokka X, the interior space is similar. The boot capacity, which has a practical shelf that can be placed at two heights, is 350 litres. Beneath the shelf there is room for a standard-size spare wheel.

Interior: very high-tech and connected

The interior of the Opel Mokka also made a very good impression on me in the versions equipped with the top infotainment system, the Media Navi Pro. In this case it includes the spectacular “Pure Panel”, with 12-inch digital instrumentation and a 10-inch multimedia screen.

The basic versions start with analogue instrumentation and a 7-inch screen. This top system with two screens comes as standard on the Ultimate trim, and costs 1,200 euros on the rest. It is worth it, as the intermediate version, the Media Navi, already costs 1,000 euros, and its screens are 7 inches.

In both cases the “basic” Opel Connect services are offered, which can be complemented with additional services and an e-call system for an extra 300 euros.

The two screens are positioned so that they almost look like one, with the multimedia system’s screen angled towards the driver. Voice control and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not missing. Even so, I like that the new Mokka’s interior keeps physical buttons for some main functions (radio, climate control).

The centre console is also well resolved: in the automatic versions it is completely clear since there is no gear lever; gear changes are made via the paddles on the steering wheel. For now we haven’t seen how this console looks in a Mokka with a manual gearbox.

Important details to note include the arrival on the Mokka of technological options such as IntelliLux LED matrix headlights, a panoramic rear-view camera, a front collision alert system with pedestrian detection and “stop and go” function, and a automatic lane centring system.

Very efficient petrol and diesel engines… but without an ECO label

As for the engine range, almost everything is good… And I say almost because, for now, there are no versions of the new Mokka with combustion engines that are electrified, which would allow it to carry the ECO label from the DGT. The only way to have a “green” label is through the aforementioned Mokka-e, which goes directly to the ZERO label.

What the Mokka can boast is a very efficient engine range, with homologated consumption and emissions figures among the best in its category. You can choose between the 1.2 three-cylinder petrol in 100 and 130 CV versions, or the 1.5 four-cylinder diesel with 110 CV, which works with AdBlue and a particulate filter. For the two most powerful ones you can opt for an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Fuel consumption starts at 5.5 l/100 km for the petrol versions, and from 4.3 l/100 km for the diesel.

Range, prices and discounts of the 2021 Opel Mokka

Opel announces a Opel Mokka on its website from 18,250 euros. This is the entry version, with the 1.2 100 CV petrol engine, manual gearbox and Edition trim. But this price includes all the discounts you could add: the brand’s discount, the financing discount and the contribution from Opel if you benefit from the Renove Plan.

If we consider only the official discount offered by Opel on list prices, which is 1,250 euros for the basic version and 2,750 euros for the rest, the prices of the range by engine and equipment would be as follows:

  • Mokka 1.2 100 CV Edition: 19,750 euros
  • Mokka 1.2 100 CV Business Elegance: 21,250 euros
  • Mokka 1.5 D 110 CV Edition: 21,250 euros
  • Mokka 1.2 130 CV GS Line: 21,650 euros
  • Mokka 1.5 D 110 CV GS Line: 21,750 euros
  • Mokka 1.2 130 CV Business Elegance: 22,650 euros
  • Mokka 1.5 D Business Elegance: 22,750 euros
  • Mokka 1.2 130 CV Aut. GS Line: 23,450 euros
  • Mokka 1.2 130 CV Aut. Business Elegance: 24,450 euros
  • Mokka 1.2 130 CV Ultimate: 26,350 euros
  • Molka 1.5 D 110 CV Ultimate: 26,450 euros
  • Mokka 1.2 130 CV Aut. Ultimate: 28,150 euros

But be careful: once you go to the brand’s configurator, you’ll see that you cannot choose a Mokka with solid paint, which means you must add 500 euros for metallic paint to these prices. From here on, you’ll have any additional discounts linked to financing, and the one offered by Opel if you take advantage of the Renove Plan, which is only valid when handing in a car for scrapping under the conditions set out by the plan.

With these prices and discounts, the Mokka is very competitive against its rivals, and there are quite a few. The Mokka competes with no less than the Ford Puma, the C3 Aircross, the Hyundai Kona, the Nissan Juke, the Renault Captur, the Peugeot 2008, the Seat Arona or the Volkswagen T-Cross.

Our ideal Opel Mokka would be the 1.2 petrol with 130 CV, preferably with the 8-speed automatic gearbox (1,200 euros more than the manual version) and the GS Line trim, which best suits this bold urban SUV that offers boldness without losing sight of efficiency and versatility.
