Peugeot has confirmed the presentation at the Frankfurt Motor Show of the most powerful production car in the brand’s history. We are referring to the RZC R, with a new 1.6 THP engine, improved engine downsizing management, aerodynamic optimisation and vehicle weight reduction.

With 270 CV, the RCZ R accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than six seconds, with CO2 emissions held to just 145 g/km, and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The new Twin Scroll turbo engine sets a specific power record in its category, with almost 170 CV per litre, a figure that ranks among the best for a production car engine. The engine also complies with the Euro 6 anti-pollution standard.

The aerodynamic work has allowed rear downforce to be increased thanks to a new spoiler that improves stability at high speed without degrading drag resistance. The pursuit of lightness has been another guiding principle, with the development of specific components that have allowed 17 kilos to be saved compared with the 200 CV RCZ. With a weight of 1,280 kg, the RCZ R therefore has a power-to-weight ratio of just 4.7 kg/CV.

Externally, the RCZ R is distinguished by its matt black wheel arches and dark-mask Titanium headlights, ground clearance lowered by 10 mm, 19-inch wheels with specific two-tone diamond-cut and matt black alloys, and a specific diffuser with chrome exhaust outlets. Equipment includes a glossy or satin carbon roof, body decals or black mirror housings, xenon headlights with headlight washers, and the WIP Nav Plus multimedia system. It will be available in four new colours, Rouge Erythrée, Noir Perle Nera, Gris Sidobre and Blanc Opale, with various customisation options.

Inside, the seats will be upholstered in a mix of Nappa leather and Alcantara in black, and are highlighted by a chrome “R” logo framed in red.

Among other details revealed by the brand, firmer new suspension settings, a Torsen limited-slip differential and four-piston brakes will be used, among others.

But the undoubted star will be the 1.6 engine. Engineers have worked on a new exhaust manifold in steel with an unprecedented architecture, able to withstand the higher operating temperatures of the turbo. The new pistons, which allow a compression ratio of 9.2:1 and were developed together with Mahle Motorsport, are forged with an aluminium coating “used in Formula 1”, and feature a new integrated cooling system. The connecting rods have also been changed to withstand constant high-rpm use of the engine. Their bearings, with a polymer coating, allow them to withstand higher cylinder pressures. Patented and presented in 2011 by Mahle, they are being applied in series for the first time worldwide in the RCZ R.
