Porsche Taycan: here are all the secrets of its battery

The Porsche Taycan features a very specific technology that makes optimal use of the electricity needed for this electric car.

The Porsche Taycan is one of the most anticipated models from the German manufacturer, so we are eager to learn more about it and its technical features. One of the most important elements of an electric vehicle is the battery, and in the Porsche Taycan is something we need to get to know a little better.

Location of the Porsche Taycan’s battery

In the Porsche Taycan the battery has been placed in the floor. This battery location lowers the car’s centre of gravity and delivers a better result in the car’s dynamic behaviour. A correct weight distribution makes the car easier to handle.

Battery structure

The Porsche Taycan’s battery consists of a casing with a supporting structure at the bottom and an upper cover. Between the two is a tubular structure with several compartments to house the different battery sections. The battery also has space for the cooling system. All of this is protected by the steel casing, and the elements are joined using new inert gas metal welding technology (“Metallschweißen mit inerten Gasen”), which guarantees their durability and quality.

800-volt electrical system

One of the features of the Porsche Taycan’s batteries is that they use an 800-volt electrical system, compared with the 400-volt system used by most electric vehicles on the market. This has consequences for the battery design, since the plugs and cables are somewhat thicker than in other electric cars. In return, there are improvements in managing the stored electricity and additional losses due to ohmic resistance are reduced.

Furthermore, by doubling the battery voltage the current in the vehicle can be reduced while power stays the same, meaning that the cross-section of the cables is smaller. Advanced technology for a car that aims to make a difference in electric mobility with power and style.

As there are several versions of the Porsche Taycan, there are several types of batteries. The Taycan Turbo and Turbo S are equipped with a Performance Plus battery, which can also be chosen as an option on the Porsche Taycan 4S. This battery has 33 modules made up of 12 individual cells, making 396 units, which together are capable of storing 93.4 kWh.

This battery uses a flexible film to contain the electrodes. In this way, the entire battery space can be used more efficiently, improving characteristics such as weight and efficiency.

Battery temperature control

The battery works optimally at a certain temperature, so the Taycan is equipped with a system that keeps it operating at the right temperature at all times. The cooling system can raise or lower the temperature so that it works correctly at all times.

The cooling system consists of a radiator located at the front, three pumps and six valves for the coolant, two fans and ten temperature sensors that keep the battery in good condition and optimise its operation. These elements are joined by those of the climate control system, namely a condenser, an evaporator and a heat exchanger.

Everything related to the Porsche Taycan’s battery is regulated by specific software, which is able to control the use of the energy stored in the battery according to driving conditions and battery temperature. Overall, the driver of a Porsche Taycan will enjoy the best experience with one of the most impressive electric cars on the market.
