Porsche has released the details of its new gem, a completely new V8 engine that it will use in its upcoming launches.

Although it may seem strange to some, Porsche has a great history with V8 engines, and with this new engine it wants to position itself as one of the benchmarks.

After the 928, launched in 1978 and sold until 1995, the Stuttgart brand was left without a presence in the realm of large V engines, focusing instead on the 911 and Boxster, which used flat-six boxer architecture. However, its large V8 of up to 5 liters of displacement had delivered such great results that it was crowned as one of the best V8s of the last decades of the previous century.

The resurrection of the V8 at Porsche had to wait until 2002, when, with the all-powerful Cayenne, a new V8 family was launched in both naturally aspirated and turbo versions, with an initial displacement of 4.5 liters that later rose to 4.8 liters, lasting to this day.

However, in these very negative times for large engines, the German brand has had to develop a new, smaller engine to meet anti-pollution regulations. This new powertrain was presented yesterday at the Vienna Motor Symposium.

This new V8 will be noticeably smaller, with a displacement of just under 4 liters

It is a completely new engine, unprecedented to date within the brand. The exact displacement is not known, although Porsche has admitted that the 3.0 TFSI V6 engine of Audi was used as the starting point for its development. Therefore, this V8 from Porsche may have a displacement of just under 4 liters.

It is supercharged by two turbochargers and fed through a direct injection system. It is capable of deactivating half of its cylinders in low-load situations, and is optimized for use with Start&Stop and hybrid systems. The result is the most compact and lightweight V8 engine ever, ready to replace the current 4.8 V8 Biturbo fitted to the Panamera and Cayenne in their respective versions.

Its launch is planned for next year, when the new generations of Cayenne and Panamera will be presented. In the Turbo versions of both models its power is rated at 550 CV, with a maximum torque of 770 NM. Despite its greater performance, Porsche boasts that this engine will offer consumption and emissions figures noticeably lower than the current 4.8 V8. Only time will tell.
