The BMW M5 and the Mercedes E63 AMG S: the two most radical saloons come face to face

The BMW M5 and the Mercedes E63 AMG S are the ultimate rivals, and today they have gone head to head in a drag race. Both offer similar performance.

Sports saloons are a segment that delivers a perfect combination of sportiness and comfort, but over time their attributes have become more typical of a true supercar than of a traditional vehicle. Two outstanding examples and representatives of saloons with a clearly radical character are the BMW M5 and the Mercedes E63 AMG S, two vehicles that compete directly. Both models have gone head to head thanks to the guys at Carwow, who pitted them against each other in an acceleration race.

Both German brands have been responsible for building a long legacy of sports saloons, which have made history as their lives have progressed generation after generation. Both BMW and Mercedes have put their maximum effort into fitting the latest technology into their flagship vehicles, offering their customers the chance to enjoy a comfortable journey and, at the same time, switch off completely and unleash the more mischievous and aggressive side of the M5 and the E63 AMG.

This is what happened in this video, in which both models face off without holding back, with the aim of settling once and for all which is the fastest. We should remember that both the Mercedes and the BMW come with a very similar tuning setup, which makes it even harder to define a clear winner. However, this short film will help us put doubts to rest and see the performance of the German saloons in action.

If we lift the bonnet of the Mercedes, we will find a powerful 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that is well known for powering almost all of the models bearing the AMG badge. It is capable of delivering 612 CV of power and 850 Nm of torque, figures that under normal circumstances are split between both axles but, thanks to the new 4Matic+ system, the E63 AMG can send all of its power to the rear wheels and turn into a true drifting machine.

The BMW has not fallen short either, since its latest creation also offers a traction system with the same operating principle, called M xDrive, in which the power generated by its engine is routed directly to drive the rear wheels. The heart of the M5 is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 capable of producing 600 CV and 750 Nm of torque, figures that are more than enough to put a traditional supercar in a tight spot.

In the drag race carried out in the video, we can see the Mercedes E63 AMG S take a slight lead over the BMW, which is down to its 12 CV more and its 100 Nm more torque. However, acceleration was not the only thing measured in this test, since braking also proved to be a fundamental factor in determining an overall winner.
