The Polestar 5 is unveiled to the world and begins sales immediately

Polestar has a new addition to its lineup with the Polestar 5, an electric sports GT of enormous power and all the technology the brand has to offer

In spring 2020 Polestar presented the Precept, a prototype that gave us a preview of the nearer future of the Swedish electric vehicle manufacturer in terms of sustainable technologies and materials that could be used in the production of its vehicles. This prototype has also laid the foundations for the new model the brand adds to its lineup, the Polestar 5, which they have presented at the IAA Mobility in Munich.

If the Precept was a GT prototype that drew attention for its exquisite design, the Polestar 5 is a perfect continuation of the first, reaching production while retaining much of the design of this prototype that captivated us in 2020. Its lines, according to Polestar, draw directly from the world of aviation, and this is conveyed in its surfaces that wrap around its aerodynamic features, in the form of a wing leading to a rear section in the Kamm style, the aerodynamic approach of the 1930s that gave rise to iconic designs such as the Audi A2, the Citroën CX or the Honda CR-Z, among many others.

The Polestar 5 is presented as a GT 5 metres long and 1.42 metres tall, with a low-set front end featuring the SmartZone grille introduced with the Precept, flanked by Dual Blade headlights with Pixel LED technology as standard and beneath which sit generously sized air intakes. The front is especially notable for its wheels, which sit practically at the level of the bonnet line, a design made possible by the PPA platform it uses and by the front suspension design, unique in its segment.

From the side, the Polestar 5’s glazed surfaces flow seamlessly into its aerodynamic silhouette. In fact, the brand highlights a drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0.24. This might suggest a loss of cabin space, but to avoid this Polestar has applied the same solution found on the Polestar 4: the head restraints are shifted rearward, along with a digital rear-view mirror and a virtual rear window. The rear of the Polestar 5 is also a well-executed and tasteful exercise in design and aerodynamics, featuring LED lights and an integrated rear diffuser.

Its interior, as we already knew from the Precept, uses natural fibre materials, such as the one applied to the front seats and developed together with BComp. The result is a material which, combined with ampliTex, is up to 40% lighter than plastic and allows up to 50% fewer fossil fuel-based materials to be used. The same applies to the front boot lining, UltraSilent from AutoNeum, which is 60% lighter than traditional plastic and much easier to recycle.

From here we find a 4+1 seating configuration, the front seats designed in collaboration with Recaro, featuring as standard the MicroTech finish in Charcoal, although additional options will be available that add ventilation and massage functions to the heating and electric adjustment already included as standard. The rear seats share the same design as the front and can be adjusted independently of one another. Occupants of the rear seats will also have controls for climate regulation and the various seat functions, all within a space that will feel even more spacious thanks to the panoramic roof. Just behind these seats is the boot, with a capacity of 365 litres.

Naturally, the Polestar 5 comes equipped with the latest technology on the market, such as the landscape-oriented central screen of 14.5 inches run through Android Automotive, the Laser-Line ambient lighting, the option to fit the Bowers & Wilkins sound system with 21 speakers and 1,680 W of power in place of the standard 10-speaker system, or active road noise cancellation, among others. These technologies are complemented by the numerous driver assistance and safety systems included as standard, not to mention the 8 airbags it is fitted with.

As for its powertrains, the Polestar 5 will be offered at two power levels. On one hand, there is the Dual Motor version, in which the combination of both motors on each axle delivers 550 kW (748 CV) along with a torque of 812 Nm, figures that allow it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. On the other hand, there is the Performance version, in which total power rises to 650 kW (884 CV) and torque to 1,015 Nm, a combination that also allows it to accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. In both cases the top speed is limited to 250 km/h.

In both cases a 112 kWh NMC lithium-ion battery is used, with a charging capacity of up to 11 kW AC and up to 350 kW DC, so in the latter case it can go from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes. Finally, it is worth noting that thanks to this battery, the Dual Motor version of the Polestar 5 is rated by the brand at a range of 670 kilometres, while in the Performance version this drops to 565 kilometres.

Polestar will not delay the arrival of the Polestar 5 in the European market, and has already announced an indicative launch price of 121,900 euros for the Dual Motor version and from 145,300 euros for the Performance version. The Polestar 5 can already be ordered online through the brand’s website.
