The Italian brand has hit the nail on the head with this modest twin-cylinder engine, perfect for an era in which almost everyone is desperately looking to reduce fuel consumption and polluting emissions. It is no wonder, then, that it wants to keep squeezing this golden goose, which was honoured a couple of weeks ago with the “International Engine of the Year” award.

One of the most obvious ways is to extend its availability to more products of the Group Fiat. The new Lancia Ypsilon has been the next model chosen and, before 2011 is over, it will appear in the range of the Punto Evo.

On the other hand, we learned at the end of last year that the Alfa Romeo MiTo will have it under its bonnet in 2012. It has now been confirmed that the next generation of the Fiat Panda will also get it, and its public presentation is getting closer by the day.

However, this city car will not receive the same turbocharged version of the TwinAir engine that has been enjoying so much success. Instead, it will be naturally aspirated with around 66 hp, designed solely for customers who need a city car and want to spend as little as possible both on the price of the model and on fuel. Likewise, the engine will soon expand the family with other variants, such as one that can also run on natural gas and another with almost 110 CV.
