This is the Mahle engine that could revolutionise electric cars

Mahle presents a new electric motor concept that, unlike current ones, can deliver its maximum thrust capacity for longer and continuously

Mahle Sct Motor

The German manufacturer Mahle has surprised with its new electric motor concept called SCT, short for “Superior Continuous Torque”, which, if it delivers on its promises, could mean a revolution in its application to electric vehicles. Firstly because the brand claims it is a motor with a much longer lifespan than that of any other electric motor currently in use.

Secondly, because it can deliver as much as 90% of its maximum thrust capacity continuously and almost indefinitely. And the best part is that this electric motor concept, thanks to its extremely compact design, can be used in any vehicle, from motorcycles to cars or even trucks.

The secret of Mahle’s SCT motor

Where is the secret? What does this Mahle motor have that other electric motors don’t? For now, not many details have been revealed, but we do know that it uses permanent synchronous magnets and does without rare earths, instead using neodymium magnets so that they can generate a powerful magnetic field. By not needing an excitation current to the rotor, efficiency is increased and wear is reduced, a characteristic of this type of permanent-excitation motor.

But what is truly novel about this motor is its integrated oil cooling system, capable of using the heat generated within the vehicle’s system. The video shows how it works.

Mahle also announces that it can manufacture the motor without magnets, although in this case the advantage of compactness is lost, the resulting motor being larger; however, the advantages in terms of efficiency and durability would be maintained.
