Volkswagen will pause production at the Zwickau plant for one week

The drop in demand for the brand’s electric vehicles is forcing Volkswagen to adjust its operations, with the aim of optimising its resources and adapting to a constantly changing market.

According to a recent report, the German manufacturer is set to suspend production at its Zwickau plant, which exclusively builds electric vehicles, during the first full week of October. The plant currently assembles five electric models based on the MEB platform: the VW ID.3, the Cupra Born, the VW ID.4, the VW ID.5, as well as the Audi Q4 e-tron and its Sportback variant.

These same reports, published in German media, also indicate that the company is evaluating the temporary suspension of production at its German plant in Emden, which also builds electric vehicles. However, there is no official confirmation of this yet.

Everything suggests that the situation in Zwickau is currently quite difficult. The plant has been affected by changes to the model distribution, agreed in advance with the unions following wage negotiations. Under these agreements, production of the ID.3 and the Cupra Born will move to Wolfsburg within the next two or three years, once Golf manufacturing at that plant ends and moves to Mexico. Likewise, the ID.4, currently built in both Zwickau and Emden, will be built exclusively in Emden. Meanwhile, the ID.5 is set to be discontinued due to weak demand.

All these changes will mean that, in the medium term, Zwickau will be left solely with production of the Audi Q4 e-tron, alongside a new recycling competence centre. This situation is causing a great deal of uncertainty among the workforce, because production of the Q4 e-tron will probably not be enough to keep the plant running at full capacity.

Emden will also very probably stop

At the Emden plant, meanwhile, where the ID.4, ID.7 and ID.7 Tourer are built, as already mentioned, a production pause of several days is also being considered, although talks with the works council have not yet concluded.

The problems for the German manufacturer do not end here, however. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles recently announced that its Hannover plant, which builds the T7 Multivan and the ID. Buzz, will close during the autumn holidays in Lower Saxony, temporarily suspending vehicle manufacturing.

This turbulent situation, which also affects European plants of other brands, highlights the ongoing challenges facing the European automotive industry as a result of fluctuating demand for electric vehicles and the global economic situation.
