Volvo promises more than 800 km of range for its new EX60 SUV
With its new-generation electric architecture, the EX60 breaks down all those barriers that may have kept you from making the leap to electric mobility until now, offering a remarkable range and surprisingly fast charging times.
Volvo will present its new mid-size electric SUV, the EX60, on January 21, which will succeed the successful XC60. With less than two weeks to go before its global debut, the Swedish brand has revealed some relevant details about its technical specifications that are worth discussing.
The EX60 is based on the new SPA3 platform, developed exclusively for electric vehicles and much more efficient, thanks to which it will be capable of covering, according to the Swedish manufacturer, up to 810 kilometres under the WLTP homologation cycle. This figure is, however, still preliminary, and we should not be surprised if it increases slightly when the official figure is announced, as this would not be the first time this has happened.

With this data on the table, the new mid-size SUV from Volvo will be the electric model with the longest range in the brand’s entire lineup of vehicles with this propulsion system. It is also worth noting that this range figure refers to the all-wheel-drive version, so we can expect an even greater range if Volvo markets a version with a single motor on the rear axle.
A true distance-devouring machine
Volvo has not yet revealed the exact capacity of the battery pack equipping the EX60, nor the details of the all-wheel-drive system. In any case, it seems difficult for such a high range to be achieved with a battery pack below 100 kWh. To put this into perspective, its bigger sibling, the EX90, features a battery pack of up to 107 kWh depending on the version, although in that case, being a less efficient vehicle, its range only slightly exceeds 600 km.
Another notable aspect of the EX60 is its DC charging power. Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, this model will be able to recover up to 340 kilometres of range in just ten minutes, provided it uses a charging point delivering 400 kW. The Swedish manufacturer assures that charging will remain stable under any weather conditions, outperforming in this area the brand’s new electric saloon, the ES90, which supports up to 350 kW.

The EX60 also incorporates some innovations that we cannot overlook. The battery pack is integrated directly into the vehicle’s structure using Cell-to-Body technology, while the electric motors are of in-house development. Furthermore, this new SUV is the first Volvo mass-production model to employ Megacasting, a technique in which large castings made in a single operation replace hundreds of smaller components, reducing weight and simplifying assembly.

For now, this is all we know, but in just a few days we will know much more and, as always, we will tell you about it here at HighMotor.
