Volvo XC20, the Swedish electric crossover, is getting closer

Volvo is preparing a 100% electric crossover that will be positioned below its siblings, the XC40 and XC60. Its launch is planned for 2023

Volvo C40 Recharge

The Swedish brand will continue expanding its electric range after the presentation of the XC40 Recharge and the coupé-style version, the C40 Recharge, but this time with a smaller crossover than its siblings. A crossover in the B-segment that will have to face tough rivals such as the Peugeot e-2008, the Renault Captur E-TEch or the Opel Mokka-e.

Its name is not yet official, as the options of XC20 or XC30 are on the table, so for this we will have to wait for Volvo to confirm the official name of this warrior.

Rise of crossovers

The decision by Volvo to make its way with more SUV-type variants is solely driven by demand. More and more brands are betting on the crossover segment, compact SUV-style vehicles that generally offer better dynamics thanks to their lower height, and which consumers increasingly demand.

The platform it will be based on is the so-called SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture), a platform from the Chinese giant Geely, to which the Swedish brand belongs. Therefore, the small XC20 will share its platform with other models in the group, such as the upcoming 100% electric crossover from Smart.

Plataforma SEA Geely

Being built on this platform, the upcoming XC20 will have a length of around 4.10 metres and purely electric powertrains, given that there is no data on its possible mechanical layout.

The positioning of the new Volvo XC20 in the market will follow the line that Volvo has adopted over recent years: a premium crossover with better finishes than the competition and a starting price above its rivals.

A single motor on the front axle

The characteristics of this crossover suggest that it will only have a single motor on the front axle, unlike its larger siblings, the XC40 and C40, which have a motor on each axle and all-wheel drive.

As for its range, nothing is known yet. The SEA platform allows batteries between 24 and 42 kWh to be fitted, so we will have to wait for Volvo to see how it develops this key factor, bearing in mind that we are dealing with a 100% electric car.

The launch of the crossover is planned for the year 2023, so it will join the brand’s 100% electric models that will reach the market from now on, such as the electric version of the XC90, since let us remember that Volvo plans to be a 100% electric brand by 2030.
