Audi RS Q e-tron E2: the four-ring machine built to win the 2023 Dakar Rally
The evolution of the RS Q e-tron is now lighter, more aerodynamic and more efficient, and it will debut in October at the 2022 Rally of Morocco

Following its successful participation in the 2022 Dakar Rally, the four-ring brand returns this year with the evolution of its RS Q e-tron, a prototype that, in addition to adding the letters E2 to its name in tribute to the Audi Sport quattro, features a completely redesigned body, optimised aerodynamics and greater efficiency.
The project is currently in the second phase of its development programme, all with the aim of debuting in Morocco next October and, later, demonstrating what it is capable of at the 2023 Dakar Rally, where last year it achieved several stage victories despite this being a completely new discipline for the brand.
A completely new design
The first and most significant improvement to the Audi RS Q e-tron E2 is its bodywork, as it does not retain a single part of its predecessor, as Axel Löffler, head of design for the new prototype, confirmed.

Designed around the interior dimensions prescribed by the company, the RS Q e-tron E2 features a cabin sitting closer to the ground, which allows it to lower the centre of gravity and, with less weight, since the front and rear bonnets have been redesigned, optimising the fabric layers of the materials.
Aerodynamics is another aspect improved in this second edition of the model: despite narrowing the bodywork, they have managed to save more weight, optimise airflow and reduce total aerodynamic drag by around 15% without altering the top speed of 170 km/h.

Greater efficiency
The new model’s propulsion system is practically identical to that of its predecessor, consisting of an energy converter made up of an internal combustion engine and a generator, a high-voltage battery and two electric motors, one located on each axle.
However, something Audi can boast about is that its vehicle is even more environmentally friendly, since numerous adjustments have been made to the power controllers to avoid power surges when jumping or driving over uneven terrain, something that did happen in last year’s Dakar.

The handling for its drivers and co-drivers has also been optimised, as its use has been simplified to four selectable menus (Stage, Road, Error and Settings) operated from a rotary control knob for more intuitive and comfortable handling.
In addition, the new body panels and the ten-spoke Rotiform wheels allow for a more comfortable and faster intervention in the event of a puncture, a very common situation in the iconic Rally.
