BMW ensures the medium- and long-term life of its inline six-cylinder engines with the new BMW M Ignite technology that will begin to be fitted in the summer

While BMW M prepares on the one hand for the arrival of the fully electric M3, on the other hand it presents the BMW M Ignite technology, patented by the brand itself in 2024 for its high-performance petrol engines and which will arrive on models such as the M2, M3 and M4 this year. It is an innovation for combustion engines that has been developed and tested in competition, and which will also help meet the strict Euro 7 standard.

The new BMW M Ignite technology revolves around inline six-cylinder petrol engines and the pre-chamber located inside the cylinder head, which is connected to the main combustion chamber of the cylinder through overflow openings. It also has its own spark plug and ignition coil, which means the engine itself has two ignition systems.

But let us explain a little about how it works so you can better understand what it is about. When the engine is running at low and medium revs, the conventional spark plug in the main combustion chamber fires before the pre-chamber spark plug. However, when the engine operates at higher revs and loads, the pre-chamber ignition takes centre stage, with part of the air-fuel mixture channelled through the openings into the pre-chamber, where it is also ignited.

This means the ignition jets are responsible for igniting the mixture in the main combustion chamber, above the piston, at multiple points at the same time. The result is a significant increase in combustion speed, and it also counteracts the possible cause of uncontrolled combustion. Additionally, a reduction in exhaust gas temperature is achieved, allowing a higher compression ratio and turbochargers with variable-geometry turbines.

Thanks to BMW M Ignite technology, efficiency is significantly increased in inline six-cylinder engines, especially when the engine is pushed to its limit, while fuel consumption at low revs is substantially reduced, something owners who take their cars on track will appreciate. Moreover, and perhaps most importantly, BMW M ensures compliance with the Euro 7 standard and that its high-performance cars can continue to be sold in the future without problems.

BMW states that its BMW M Ignite technology will begin to be applied to the M3 and M4 models from July 2026 and, from August 2026, it will be the turn of the M2.
