Mercedes-AMG successfully completes winter tests for its new four-door GT Coupé

With these tests, Mercedes-AMG confirms that the technologies first tested on the Concept AMG GT XX will enter series production this same year

Shortly before its highly anticipated world premiere, Mercedes-AMG has successfully completed winter testing of its new fully electric four-door GT Coupé. It is the first production model based on the AMG.EA high-performance architecture, whose market launch is scheduled for before the end of 2026.

Although the German manufacturer has not yet revealed key figures such as total system output, battery pack specifications or range, it has shared some specific details, which we outline below.

The new four-door GT Coupé from Mercedes-AMG will be officially presented next May in the United States. The company did, however, show a camouflaged prototype last November during an event held alongside the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas. On that occasion the brand also revealed that actor Brad Pitt will star in the advertising campaign for this model.

The final winter tests were carried out at Mercedes-AMG’s test centre in Arjeplog, Sweden. Several near-production prototypes were subjected to demanding conditions on snow-covered roads and on the frozen surfaces of frozen lakes, with sub-zero temperatures.

Some noteworthy details about this model

While these tests were under way, the company previewed some of the most notable technical features of the model. For the first time, a fully electric sports car will incorporate the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system, combined with three axial-flux motors and a battery with direct cell cooling. This battery concept makes it possible to sustain high performance over time and offers excellent charging capability, even in extreme cold.

It is worth noting that Mercedes-AMG had already tested these technologies extensively last year with the Concept AMG GT XX. This prototype set several records by covering more than 40,000 kilometres in just eight days at a sustained average speed of 300 km/h, subjecting the hardware to extreme demands. The prototypes were equipped with three axial-flux motors developed by Yasa (a subsidiary of Mercedes) and a battery with direct cooling, technologies that will enter series production within the new AMG.EA architecture.

The four-door GT Coupé from Mercedes-AMG will thus be the first production model to use this high-performance electric platform. Its manufacture and first deliveries will begin later this same year. In addition, Mercedes-AMG is already working on an electric SUV based on the same AMG.EA architecture, whose testing began at the end of 2024.
